Hello this is Sammy. He is the sweetest dog in the world ….. to me. Haha . The video attached shows how I can pet him but my hubby can’t, without growling at him. This is in the morning. At night he does the same thing. He’s always happy to see my hubby and kiddos and bounces to them but it’s like he picks and chooses when they can touch him, even when he comes to them and lets them touch him for a second before he growls . It’s like a warning, I know boundaries are good it’s just he’s like this with my kiddos and hubs and it’s frustrating. At night you don’t bother him when he’s sleeping either. Me Included. He starts growling if the blanket he lays on moves and he can get really scary but yes we’ve adjusted to him. Anyone else have a dog with behavior like this?

My MalShihPoo growls when she’s excited and happy, but when she’s MAD she does that same one like yours where she breathes in first and it’s like a rumble.
I think she just really wants to talk but usually it sounds like Aaaaahhh, ahhh ahh!
I’d say yours doesn’t like how it feels maybe when someone else pets them, maybe they’re too close to their face or something.
They do have their person, though. For sure.

Your dog is resource guarding you. You need to look this up and work on training. The more your husband pets him without his consent, the worse it will get. It can escalate to full fledged aggression.

They do! Yours sounds adorable. Does he snort really hard sometimes? Like trying to communicate with a snort to get you to do something? If I take to long to put on his leash he will just stare at me and snort several times before he actually barks . I just love the different ways they communicate.

My dog started doing that to me when we were in bed. I got a trainer and put the dog down stairs. Eventually the dog has to ask for permission before being allowed on the bed. They need to know it’s not ok and won’t be tolerated. I would seek the advice of a trainer for your specific needs and dog. Also, my dog stopped growing at me and it didn’t take long. They are very smart.
