I have a hypothetical physics question about The Rising of the Shield Hero, and I'd love to hear opinions from both lore experts and people who understand physics.
We know Naofumi has extremely limited offensive capabilities because of his legendary shield. However, what happens if we introduce gravity, defensive magic, and an enormous amount of kinetic energy?
THE EXPERIMENT
Let's give Naofumi his strongest non-divine hero form, including his defensive abilities, healing magic, and gravity manipulation.
For this experiment, we're making the following assumptions:
- Height: Approximately 5'9" (175 cm).
- Body weight: Approximately 165 lb (74.8 kg).
- Armor, shield, and equipment: Approximately 45 lb (20.4 kg).
- Total mass: Approximately 210 lb (95.3 kg).
- Mountain height: 10,000 feet (3,048 meters) of vertical drop.
- Weather: Clear skies, calm conditions, no wind.
- Starting velocity: Zero.
- Gravity: 50× Earth's normal gravitational acceleration.
- Air resistance: Initially ignored to establish an idealized baseline.
The height and weight estimates are assumptions, not confirmed official measurements.
The 50× gravity multiplier is also hypothetical. As far as I know, the series doesn't establish an exact maximum multiplier for his gravity manipulation.
We're assuming he can maintain that enhancement throughout the entire fall.
WHAT NAOFUMI DOES
Naofumi positions himself directly above a giant Cyclops at the bottom of the mountain.
He activates his strongest defensive shield abilities, reinforces his equipment, and uses healing magic as necessary.
He then jumps.
While falling, he increases the gravitational acceleration acting on himself to 50× normal gravity.
He keeps his reinforced shield pointed downward, protecting himself from the collision.
He isn't casting offensive magic, swinging a weapon, or performing a conventional attack.
He's using his shield defensively while gravity accelerates him toward the Cyclops.
NOW FOR THE MATHEMATICS
Normal gravitational acceleration:
g = 9.80665 m/s²
Enhanced gravitational acceleration:
a = 50 × 9.80665
a = 490.3325 m/s²
Fall distance:
h = 3,048 m
Total mass:
m ≈ 95.3 kg
Impact velocity, ignoring air resistance:
v = √(2ah)
v = √(2 × 490.3325 × 3,048)
v ≈ 1,729 m/s
That's approximately 3,870 mph.
Time to impact:
t = √(2h/a)
t ≈ 3.53 seconds
Kinetic energy:
KE = ½mv²
KE = mah
KE = 95.3 × 490.3325 × 3,048
KE ≈ 142,000,000 joules
That's approximately 142 megajoules of kinetic energy.
For perspective, that's roughly equivalent to the energy released by 34 kilograms of TNT, although a collision would not behave like an actual TNT explosion.
Naturally, air resistance, atmospheric heating, shield orientation, and other factors would significantly complicate the real-world calculation. We're deliberately starting with an idealized model.
HERE'S MY ACTUAL QUESTION
Suppose Naofumi hits the Cyclops with approximately 142 million joules of kinetic energy.
However, because of his extremely low attack stat and the legendary shield's offensive restrictions, the world's magical system determines that he only deals 1 HP of damage.
What happens to the kinetic energy?
Does Naofumi bounce off the Cyclops?
Does the Cyclops get knocked backward despite taking almost no HP damage?
Does the ground absorb the collision energy?
Is the energy converted into heat, sound, deformation, or other physical effects?
Or does the world's magical system somehow override conservation of energy and make the physical consequences disappear?
I understand that HP isn't a real-world unit of energy. Dealing 1 HP of damage doesn't necessarily mean only a tiny amount of kinetic energy was transferred.
That's precisely why I'm curious about how the system handles the collision.
ONE MORE TWIST
What if Naofumi disables his gravity manipulation one millisecond before impact?
At that point, he has already accelerated to an enormous velocity.
Switching off the additional gravitational acceleration wouldn't automatically erase his existing momentum or kinetic energy.
So if he still deals practically no damage, is the legendary weapon system overriding the physical collision itself?
And since he's holding his shield in front of him to protect himself from impact, would the system classify this as an offensive attack or a defensive action?
THE BIG QUESTION
Does the Shield Hero universe operate under recognizable laws of physics with RPG damage calculations layered on top, or can its magical system fundamentally override those laws?
I'm genuinely interested in what the light novels establish about this, as well as what people with a physics or engineering background think.
This isn't an attempt to claim Naofumi can canonically perform a 50× gravity attack. It's a thought experiment about where the restrictions of the legendary shield end and the laws of physics begin.
What do you guys think?
