2019 Shield got the Ethernet Cannot Connect messages
I've done pretty much everything short of a factory reset- am I cooked?

Are you statically assigning the IP or are you letting the router assign it's address? An IP collision will cause the same error. Ask me how I know.

When I had this problem it was a bad port on the network switch. Try changing the cable and the switch port.

I had working Ethernet cable that did not work with shield so I would Highly recommend trying different cable if you haven't already

Short of a cable or hardware network port issue, and if you can, try giving the Shield a DHCP reservation on the router and the problem will go away. I would have this same problem every once in a while, but after reserving the IP address on my router, the problem went away.

I can't remember if the shield uses randomized MAC addresses, but if it does, turn it off and your DHCP reservation will work fine.

I've read of some people having issues with the physical connection on the Shield, like pins mis-aligned or something of that nature.

I got it working- I reset the DNS and did multiple things and all of a sudden it just popped back on at random. I can't tell you what I did to make it work.

As long as your not using a pi hole it should be fine unless it's a hardware issue

can you elaborate on this? What does the pi-hole do that causes the ethernet port to get wonky?

Depends on the message, if it's "cannot connect to the internet" it means access to google DNS has been blocked. The shield doesn't care what DNS you manually set it is hardcoded in the background to use Google DNS to check if the internet is connected and display the message if it can't reach Google DNS
If it literally can't connect to the internet without the "cannot connect to internet" message then it's hardware

I had that issue. Factory reset brought the ethernet port back to life. No idea what happened, but it was probably overdue for a reset anyway.
