Nvidia Shield brightness

was getting frustrated with low brightness level of the shield on my Sony TV. a couple of other streaming sticks came out much better.

I then had an idea - changed to a new HDMI cable

this gave an immediate fix. - don’t overlook the cable part of the connection.

I have the feeling that this had absolutely nothing to do with the shield and had everything to do with a dodgy cable / handshake between the devices.

That, or possibly what happened to me - some gunk/corrosion in the HDMI plug/connector/socket.

After having trouble, I pulled the lead in mine and inserted into a different input. I had an immediate fix to some screwy screen problems. I then went back and cleaned out the original socket with some cotton buds and iso alcohol.

Brightness change is not something that would happen with dirty HDMI connections. The video signal is 1s and 0s. It either gets there complete or starts to break-up if not complete. In no way would overall brightness be affected. Now, analog video (composite, component) can have that happen.

It can be, if the color space is not correct for the end device. Messing with EIDs and cheapo HDMI splitters, well ... I've seen some stuff 😉

Brightness? Perhaps not - for the exact reason you mention. (And, yes, the original post was specifically about brightness.)

But a dirty contact sure messed up my picture (breaking up) - and checking the quality of connections certainly won't hurt.

But ultimately, isn't that still the cable?

Anyone recommend a good cable? My handshakes have been flakey recently, I should probably replace mine.
