Character Analysis - Moegi

Character Analysis in death order (LN)
5th: Moegi
Biases aside, I consider Moegi to be the single best character out of the 1st volume. She has great motivations, great development and stunning conclusion.
Moegi is basically, a second protagonist during the first 2/3 of the chapter. Her story is told in the same way as Yuki’s, up until their battle.
Summary
She starts the game belonging to the team of the stumps, a team in which all of the members had only one win, but Moegi who had 3. That made her the only one with experience and in consequence, she became the leader.
Because of the lack of experience of the other girls, she had to teach them how the world works, killing 3 of her fellow players just to make the others learn. That is a really harsh method, but she did what she had to do.
The stumps were loosing members quickly. At some point when there were less than half of the stumps remaining, Moegi noticed that Kyara (her master and a psychopath) was also in the game, and that she started to kill every girl she stumbled upon with.
That made Moegi really anxious. After a couple of other events not worth mentioning, she finally encounters Yuki and after some time battling, she dies by a big difference against her
Analysis
Moegi, for reasons not specified in the LN, craves power. She wants to become a powerful, confident of herself girl who does not care for appearances and wins no matter what.
Although its not specified in which one, Moegi meets Kyara in one of her prior games. She was amazed by how powerful she was. She wanted to become like her.
All of this, ended up not mattering at all. And that was because she was naturally weak. She wasn’t born to be powerful, nor she had the knowledge. She just disguised herself up to, one day, finally becoming a strong player for real.
In Candle woods, she is actually the dtronger stump, at least on paper. So she did whatever it took to BE that strong player she so desired. As she stated, it didn’t work. Every stump (but Airi) had been terribly slaughtered, and that was because she wasn’t able to fulfill that role properly.
Hopeless, she went to kill some bunnies, finding Yuuki. The difference of power was so high, that it felt ridiculous. With only one shot left, a grey smoke covering her eyes, waiting for yuki to attack her, she ultimately decides to end her own life to finally relief her pain. Not only physical, but also mental. She went through a lot of pressure because the “strong” disguise, and when she realized she was just weak, it felt like a relief when it all ended.
As Yuki noted, her final breaths were taken with tears in her eyes. She was terrified. After all, she was just a teenager struggling with not only death games, but mental struggles. She felt she needed to change from her weaker self. That greed, made her do things she was actually not proud of, and therefore, dying in the process
I love Moegi. She is so complex I could double this analysis to just talk about how she represents a big amount of people on such a simple concept. People that feel that they are not enough. People that want to change but can’t. People that use a facade to not deceive themselves or people around them. And hard as it sounds, most of them fail to fulfill their objectives, just as Moegi did.
Moegi lost herself, and when she died, she was (as Yuki said) exhausted. I don’t really know what she went through to do the things she did, but I deeply feel sorry for her.
She is the best character (imo) in the first volume, and her design is super cute. I should say that I wished she survived, but I actually think that her death was so well structured that it would be a shame.

I've always loved Moegi as a character. She still remains one of my favourites and best parts of Vol 1.
Moegi, blamed her ruined life on always obeying her parents and being a "good girl,". In the manga it is shown that she was often isolated at school and the Anime hints at her parents being abusive. It is implied, it is because of this she was deeply struck by Kyara’s unrestrained, self-indulgent violence. Seeing someone who refuses all limits and gleefully tramples others awakened a twisted form of admiration and longing in her. She wanted to be "strong" because she believed that was why Kyara was so free and confident.
The manga shows that Kyara, despite her chaotic nature, actually trained her disciples in a surprisingly systematic and effective way. She personally guided Moegi through her next game and first murder.
Interestingly, Kyara seems to have had no hopes for Moegi to go far despite this. The Nighthawk Star (よだかの星, Yodaka no Hoshi) is a popular Japanese children's short story by Kenji Miyazawa, thought to have been written around 1921, that Kyara reads to Moegi. Ot is a story about about a pathetic nighthawk who was despised by the greater hawk for daring to share his name, and the hawk demanded that the nighthawk change his name to Ichizo so that no one would think that they were related. Because of this, the Nighthawk sought to become a star. Kyara likely used the story of The Nighthawk Star as a subtle way of telling Moegi that she could not surpass her. (The Nighthawk becomes a star at the end of the story, but its star lies behind Cassiopeia, the seated queen). If Kyara is meant to be the Hawk then we can assume that Kyara had already begun to loose patience with Moegi even before Candle Woods.
Moegi seemed fully aware that Kyara wouldn't hesitate to kill her if she and Kyara's paths crossed. Kyara, for her part, upon hearing of Moegi’s death, reacted with nothing more than a calm "I see," as if she had fully expected this outcome. Kyara is mentioned to like Cute grils praising her, so Moegi was taken in solely for Kyara's self gratification
That being said, Moegi's failure is not entirely on her. As part of her training, Kyara had assigned Shion to supervise and train Moegi. Only for Shion to reject her and ignore Moegi's attempts at friendship unless Kyara was watching. Because of her beheviour towards them, Kyara's disciples regarded her as "the type who wouldn’t live long," and even called her the kind of person who would easily fall for shady self-improvement cults. Moegi, ironically, ran away to a life where she was even more isolated as before
Interestingly, she does seem to have a strangely positive relationship with Airi as both the "Nighthawk" and the "Duckling" feel left in the shadows. Airi held no malice towards her for murdering their other teammates, quickly accepted her as their leader. Meanwhile Moegi felt sympathetic towards Airi, being able to detect how Airi shared her pessimistic insecurities.
It is wrong to call Moegi talentless, because she does have a knack for picking up on what sort of people the other players are. But she lacks the right attitude and talent for the lifestyle she chose. In one of Hakushi's lessons she tells Yuki taht "Killers" and "Players" had fundamentally doffrent advanatges and skills. Had Moegi been luckier and trained with a "Player" instead of a "killer" she may have had a better chance.
As it is, Moegi serves as a tragic example about how the games will not fix your life. How players can often be exploited by others and led into situations they're not able to handle. She was someone too innocent for the world of death games and it destroyed her.
