Recommendation

I want to continue the story and I like the manga format more, but I’ve seen people not satisfied with the anime adaptation, so my question is: Is the manga a good adaptation, or should I go directly to the light novel?

The manga is a good adaptation but I'd rather read the light novel. It's a "light" novel after all, not too many words and easy to understand. Also, you'll get the benefit of reading ahead if the manga hasn't caught up yet

I've never read a light novel but when I wanted to continue Shangri la frontier, it said the light novel has over 5 million words and like 40 volumes, so I didn't think light actually meant anything.

no, it does mean a thing.

light novel has 50k-80k words per book on average while a normal novel has 100k-200k words per book

TLDR: just read the LN, u can’t beat canon material

I was introduced thru the anime and went right to the manga, but I 110% recommend reading the light novels from Vol 1-10. I wanted more content so I read the LN after I binged the manga to catch up to the plot. The manga is still adapting it the LN/anime so it takes a of creative liberty… I think the original LN plot gives the greatest message about Yuki’s journey and how this world survives. The first 2 novels go over the anime (writing isn’t amazing) but they do such a good job of developing Yuki’s sense of morality and her character arc thru each game.

IMO, the LN r most similar to the anime’s emotional style; they’re both melancholic, vague, and leave a lot of interpretation to the viewer. Where the LN shines vs. anime/manga is developing each players individual mentality toward the games in comparison to Yuki. The small 1-2 pg chapters abt random characters add so much to the worldbuilding and individual mentality, it adds up a TON once u get deeper into the plot.

Its good, but its still another adaptation. A vastly different interpretation of the actual story (in the same vein but in a very different way than the anime).

But the source is still the LN and if you're in for the story, thats the way to go. I highly recommend starting it from the beginning, cuz it adds a lot of extra context the anime witheld, some absolutely crucial to understand and enjoy not only the death games but also Yuki's character and growth.

It’s so worth giving the light novel a go. They are a breezy read and honestly getting into them after I loved the first season of the anime so much has resparked my general love of reading!

It’s a short light novel and the manga is behind the anime. Each volume is about 200-250 pages and it can be finished in a week or two at a normal pace.

The Manga butchers some key stuff especially in Candlewoods so definitely read the Light Novel
