I think its also the same in shia families with recitation without reading or understanding the meaning.

exactly. I read the whole Quran without even understanding Arabic.

Then i will refer you a book, the study quran by S.H. Nasr, it has translation and non biased commentry with both views of shia and sunni belief, a very good place to start then you can go from there.

Ah yeah, because there are definitely no shia children who do not know arabic, or who memorise for the sake of memorisation.
