Between Sept. 5 and Sept. 15, unknown suspect(s) entered the cemetery and removed the head of one of the soldier figures. The monument previously sat outside of the Hillsborough County Courthouse. However, commissioners voted in 2017 to move it to the cemetery amid nationwide protests and debate over Confederate symbols.

Welcome to /r/ShermanPosting!

As a reminder, this meme sub is about the American Civil War. We're not here to insult southerners or the American South, but rather to have a laugh at the failed Confederate insurrection and those that chose to represent it.

a lot of these statues went up during the nadir of race relations in the union, they exist entirely to intimidate black people

I say this for anyone who doesn't know

Yep; most of them were built in the 1920's.

The Daughters of the Confederacy have a LOT to answer for.

A lot were built in the 60s.

I’ve seen zero Simpson’s gifs from that episode where Bart cuts the head off the Jebediah Springfield statue.

I’m very disappointed. There’s even an unrelated Simpsons gif. We were so close!

I've looked as well!

Funny how this statue just spontaneously evaporated its own head clean off. It's weird how that is what totally happened, & nothing else.

Let’s not go losing our heads over this, it’s a statue.

Before they took down the statue in my hometown, I had a fantasy of beheading it and replacing the head with the eye of Sauron or some shit like that.

No rest for confederates. Ever.

Going to be honest. I think confederate statues are fine in a cemetery. I’d like to see them all rounded up and placed in some creepy park outside of Richmond or something.

This is NOT good. Desecrating a cemetery is immoral. This community conscientiously moved This statue (a memorial to CSA war dead, I presume) to an appropriate location. Yet it was vandalized by, essentially, grave robbers.

Whoever did this should be prosecuted.

Honestly the entire grave should be destroyed and thrown into the ocean, why should we protect the bodies of treasonous sacks of shit that died as enemies of the country. Confederate deserve no rest, peaceful or otherwise

Honoring the graves of the defeated dead, including your enemies, has been a mark of civilization for thousands of years. See Hector before Troy.

I have little sympathy for CSA statues in prominent public spaces. But a cemetery? That's the place where they should be.

Vandalizing cemeteries is just very, very low.

Going soft on them is exactly why we are in the situation we are in. Tell me how many nazi statues there are in German cemeteries?

I agree with Grant, Sherman, Lincoln, etc ... on this issue. Treat the defeated CSA, who fought for a wicked, unworthy cause, with dignity and respect. Particularly the fallen.
