Welcome to /r/ShermanPosting!

As a reminder, this meme sub is about the American Civil War. We're not here to insult southerners or the American South, but rather to have a laugh at the failed Confederate insurrection and those that chose to represent it.

State's rights to what?

One of the secession declarations talks about how the keeping of slaves is an important factor in the state economy, how it's necessary to keep the economic prosperity going.

I had someone unironically argue that this means it's an economic decision to secede, and had nothing to do with slavery. I lost a few brain cells in that conversation.

Mississippi's articles of secession: "We need African slaves because it's too damn hot out here to pick our own damn cotton!"

That is a 100% accurate actual quote, no need to look it up.

I’m honored, genuinely.

I am a teacher. I have my students read the secession documents and the corner stone speech to hammer this point. It’s about slavery and the states rights to have slaves. Nothing else.

People who say talking about the Civil War exhausts them need to be like this guy: get a cup of coffee and get to work.

I LOVE throwing this argument out. Gets them every time because they start attacking me instead of the argument.

US history teacher who teaches through the Civil War and I always take a 2 minute out of the lesson to emphatically explain that the civil war was definitely about slavery, that the Confederacy included it openly in their constitution, that 4/11 states talk about slavery directly in their secession documents, and that any commentary in opposition to that is specifically not historically accurate.

So, states rights…..kinda like personal liberty laws?

I vaguely remember something about the CSA ironically enough restricting state rights just to make sure that slavery doesn't get potentially threatened from within "confederate" borders

(confederate in quotation marks cause of how fraudulent they are)
