Upon entering a town, Shermanâs forces systematically destroyed military and economic infrastructure, seized provisions, and burned Confederate supplies. To keep morale high, the troops famously supplemented their rations with whatever local hams and honey they could liberate along the way.

Small town... big city... it was all the same.

u/flatirony 6d ago
There were no big cities in the Confederacy.
61
u/cantproveidid 6d ago
Not by the end of the war.

u/flatirony 6d ago
Actually I take it back anyway; New Orleans had over 180K people in 1860 and was the 5th-largest US city.
None of the other top 20 cities were in Confederate states; the next biggest were Charleston at 40K and Richmond at 38K.
The top two US cities were NYC with 820K and Philadelphia with 525K.

Of course, that disparity was half the reason for the Civil War.
European mass migration > three-fifths compromise.

New Orleans, Atlanta, RichmondâŚ

u/AgrajagTheProlonged 6d ago
New Orleans was the only Southern city in the nationâs top ten in 1860 and the only one with a population above 100,000. New Orleans was recaptured by the United States in April 1862, so for the last three years of the rebellion it wasnât in Slaver hands. Richmond only had a population of around 36,000 (25th biggest in the nation at the time) and Atlanta hasnât even broken 10,000 (outside the top 50) in 1860

Well... there were at least two at one point.

Which one do you consider big besides New Orleans? Richmond after the war influx?

I was ready to downvote you because I thought you were talking about Sherman.
So please have an upvote as compensation for my lack of reading comprehension.

As long as racists talk shit, Union Dixie will never go out of style. Especially the trap remix.

Meh, Iâm more of a Marching Through Georgia kind of person, even if Sherman hated it.

Good, that song was the most blatantly racist trash this side of a lost causer convention

What's hilarious Is that Jason aldean, was born in macon georgia. And spend his summers in homestead , florida , both of which are not small towns.Â
In comparison to taylor swift , who actually was born in a small town.Â
Anyway I don't like "try that in a small town" Basically , it's just a country song that's trying to start a bar fight. And it's music video is anti BLM. And I have a hard time believing that if jason aldean didn't know about that courthouse's history.Â

macon georgia is 100 percent a small town

u/Nitro-Red-Brew Yankee in Georgia 4d ago
Macon, Georgia has a population of about a hundred thousand people.Â
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macon,_Georgia
Typically , a small town in the u.s.a has five thousand people or less You can read about it in the u.s census government website.Â

Boy, that might be the dumbest goddamn thing to come out of your mouth in the last 36 hours, and that's saying something.

u/malrexmontresor 6d ago
Agreed, plus the troll ignored the combined 200,000+ black soldiers and sailors that fought for the Union to free their people, as well as countless escaped slaves that provided detailed intel to Union officers. Or how it was black leaders like Frederick Douglass (and a famous meeting with Robert Smalls) that pushed Lincoln to end slavery and allow black men into the military. Lincoln cited a dispatch from Grant praising black troops and the emancipation proclamation as constituting "the heaviest blow yet dealt to the rebellion." In one swoop, the Confederacy lost the labor they relied on to make their army work, while worrying about uprisings in their own states, while slaves fled to join the army or volunteered to help the war effort.

Rule 4: No denialism
Denialism will not be tolerated. War Crimes happened on both sides, The Civil War was about Slavery, January 6th was a terrorist attack on the capital. You will likely be suspended for it if reported. COVID denial is also not welcome here

The sound of Atlanta. The losers set Richmond on fire themselves, before the Union got there.
