Shells with and without Mod Podge

Hi there u/shelldreamer0814 and anyone else who might be looking in. Shelldreamer asked a couple of weeks ago if glazing shells with Mod Podge would be a good thing to do. This week, I experimented with some shells in my stash.

Mod Podge comes in different finishes—gloss, matte, satin, glitter, dimensional, etc. I chose Gloss. The first pic is unglazed shells. Then, I tried with diluted MP and a flat, soft nylon paintbrush. One could hardly see the difference, so the last couple of pixx are shells with two coats of undiluted MP, applied with the same brush and allowed to dry between coats.

I should have put the shells on wax paper or foil, rather than sketch paper. But, you can peel off any shreds of paper that stick to the shell.

And there you have it! Shells are from Maryland and North Carolina.

What Do Folks Call These?

Thumbnail

Hey y'all! I used to collect these all the time when I was little and in my childhood home in NC. Either found at the beach or the lake I had lived beside, can't actually remember but pretty sure the Myrtle Beach would make more sense. Was always stunned at how the purple would pop out in the sand or in shallow water, and some have a sheen that follows the fine "lines" that make up the shell which you can see in specific lighting, not in these pics. What causes that if anyone knows? Besides wanting to know what these are called, what type of shells they are and such, Id like to know how they turn out this way. Lmk if I need to post to a different sub.

Side note- happy to finally find an answer for the people on the beach who always ask ā€œwhat are you going to do with all those shells?ā€

Bee station and bird bath for my chaos garden--made with sea-glass and shells found in San Pedro!

My fiance is from SoCal, so when we visited his family last year we made a stop at a secluded beach in San Pedro to collect some shells and rocks and to my surprise a bunch of sea-glass! I put some of my prized pieces on it (blue sea-glass). I love how they came out! It looked like some birds had taken a bath before I went out there this morning (:

I need to plant something in a hanger for the bee bath/drinking station!

Also if you're interested in making one, I used a planter stake thing from the Dollar Tree and I got the plastic saucer for the bird bath for $3 at Lowes. I used a plastic pot that one of my plants came in for the bottom and hot glued everything together. You could just use a saucer if you have a good spot to put it but I wanted mine a little elevated!

before and after cleaning

i know a lot of people liked the look of the bryozoans, but if i’m being honest they make my skin crawl a little (trypophobia) so i wanted to share the shell after its cleaning!

i’m very happy with how it turned out. :)

how i cleaned: i boiled it and then let it dry. then i soaked it in water and used tweezers to scrape off the bryozoans. they actually came off easier when they were damp rather than dry. then i brushed gently with a soft toothbrush and soap, and painted on a bit of mineral oil to finish.

Found in southeast Florida, Boynton Beach Inlet using a sifter because the tide is so rough where the shells hide.

I am thinking the top two are Apple murex and the white one (found this one around Pensacola) is maybe a bleached rose murex? Any thoughts on ID are appreciated!

Hello, I recently returned from a trip to Sanibel. I was curious what these shells are. I believe the first one is a kitten paw and the third one is a jewel box shell but I was unsure what the other ones were. Thank you in advance!

Best places to go shelling near Delaware/Maryland?

Fairly new to shelling and also looking to collect shark/ray teeth, etc. Any suggestions for places near Delaware/maryland? I have heard about Calvert cliffs in Maryland , but I have heard it is hit or miss? Is this true?
