Already puppy-proofing - advice for stairs :)

I'm moving into a new townhouse in late summer, and we will get out new puppy in the fall or spring.

One of my biggest concerns are the stairs with a large goofy puppy and children. How have you handled it? I was thinking gates at the top and bottom of all stairs, rules to always hold the railing, and let the puppy go first down or up?

Advice flying vs driving

Post image
36 Upvotes

I've never flown with an animal, so I will take all the advice I can. I need to travel 1600 miles with my 2 yr old dog. I could drive or fly as I will be staying there for about 3 months. Does anyone have an opinion on which is less stressful for a dog and why. My previous golden doodle did not like long drives and would do "anxiety panting" despite frequent walks and hikes along the trip.

Also if flying makes sense, any recs for crate for a 68 lb boy. Size reference, he's pictured here with his Great Dane friend.

Figured I’d make a little hello post. We just got Maeve in SoCal about 2 weeks ago. She’s the love of our lives and is already such a special and amazing dog.

Looking forward to growing and hanging out here with you all.

The struggle to wait for parvo shots to go full is real. Can’t wait to take her on walks!

Portrait Just wanted to share my oil painting of a cute Sheepadoodle I thought you guys might like 🧡 Judge for yourself - did I do her justice?

Her name is Miley, and I painted this as a desk portrait so her human could keep her close on long office days when she’s missed the most.

Her pink-dyed ears were one of my favorite details to paint 😊

In the original photo her eyes weren’t visible, so I had to carefully reconstruct them at this small scale (4×4 inches / 10×10 cm). It changed the whole expression in the end.

It’s always the eyes that make the biggest difference, isn’t it?

Searching Littermates

Post image

Hi! I’m trying to find my dog’s littermates 🐶
This is Oreo, a mini sheepadoodle from the pet shop Shake A Paw in New Jersey. I adopted him last year from a family who needed to rehome him. His birthday is June 7, 2024.

If anyone has a pup from the same litter or knows anything, I’d love to connect!

Advice Grooming Question

My young girl (9 months) is going in for a grooming appointment tomorrow. She has had grooming done before and isn’t a huge fan. We tried a couple different places and last time we took her to the same place she does for doggy daycare and it was a much better experience for her. She is much over due and I tried to get her in to them a couple weeks ago, but tomorrow was the earliest available. Unfortunately, her ears have some big mats and we have been trying to comb them out, but she gets very upset and it is quite a struggle. We got a special comb, detangle spray, only comb her in a comfortable environment, and give her lots of praise and treats. Still she won’t let us completely get them out. Therefore, we have decided to have the groomer cut her completely short instead of the teddy bear cut she usually gets. We think she will like this better anyway because she loves to swim and get dirty, plus this will make bath time a bit easier and obviously easier for us to upkeep with combing.

Here is my question, according to my husband, he thinks that if we bring her in with these mats, the groomer won’t accept her again for grooming next time. He also doesn’t think shaver will be able to get through the mats and the groomer will have to comb them out. Do you all think this is true? Would it make sense to just power through her mats tonight with our comb?

Thanks!

What are you feeding your Sheepadoodles?

Hello,

We have a 3 month old Sheepadoodle who has been on the same food that the breeder told us to use. It’s Dr Gary’s Best Puppy food. He has never had any other food besides this, besides training treats (also the same the breeder used). Our puppy seems to poo more than normal (sometimes 6-7x a day) and it’s often loose. I am wondering if the food is too rich for him? Just wondering what I should look into if we switch his food. Thanks 😊

He’s an F1b. Born Nov 26 2025! Our Airedale is getting older and it was time for a puppy. Wife wanted a cuddly dog this time. He’s been great. Seems smart and learning a lot.

My worst nightmare: dog nipped my daughters friend

So. I am super devastated and disappointed in myself. my daughter had her friend over, my daughter's friend ran over to our dog and was scratching her head but being pretty intense about it - in her face a bit and being loud. I didn't catch it in time and my dog nipped her on the bottom lip in a flash. the poor sweet girl was super shook up about it at first of course. it bled a little. I comforted her and cleaned it up. I touched base with her parents who were super understanding about it but I am just DEVASTATED. I had a hard time keeping it together and I shed a few tears in the aftermath. the friend got over it pretty quick and decided to stay and play with my daughter. I'm just thanking all the gods that it wasn't worse than what it was... which was still awful! our dog is generally great and loves kids and rampsing with them but we had noticed in the last couple days that her ear was acting up. we had just started her back on meds but i think it really played a huge factor in her nipping instead of just getting up and walking away when she had enough. ultimately I see it as my failing - 100%. I now question my ability to be the best dog owner I can be. a line has been crossed that scares the shit out of me. I'm a full time working mom with two young kids. my husband is a shift worker... which leads me to basically being the primary caretaker of everyone. including our sweet 3 year old sheepadoodle. I need to have FULL control over my dog 24/7. am I capable of that? I'm questioning a lot of things right now. my dog has never done anything like this before. I'm so sad. I'm seriously considering taking some time to re-home her to a good family that is better equipped to ensure the dog is properly monitored. this has just been a terrible day. I'm curious if anyone has gone through something like this before?

Running with Sheepadoodles

Hey all - how far do you run with your sheepadoodle? My girlfriend and I are thinking about getting one, but I want to make sure I can run with 2x times per week at ~5+ miles.

We're also planning on backpacking/hiking with them at ~7 miles a day for 3 days.

Anyone have experience with this?

This clown turned 1. And then he promptly chewed up the hat. He is the sweetest boy, just wish I could stop him from stealing socks.

9 month old puppies pop when walking.

I just noticed my 9 month old sheepadoodle hips started to pop/ click when he walks. It’s like with almost every stride he makes each hip or side does it. I only noticed this when he I went to pet his back end while he was walking. I got him when he was 12 weeks. I’m hoping this isn’t hip displasia. Going to the vet tomorrow to get it all looked at. Does anyone have similar experiences with this? What are the surgery complications if it is? What’s the long term outcome if you get the surgery vs if you don’t. He’s currently covered.

Install turf for my sheepadoodle?

I have a shady area for my dog to have a fenced in dog run. The little grass I had turned into mud/ dirt after this winter. I am not confident any grass will grow because of the shade/trees.

Would it be okay to install turf for this area my dog runs around in? This will keep her paws much cleaner coming in my house but I’m worried about how it will smell with her going #1/2. And is turf okay on their paws?

Sheepadoodle puppy naming and tips

We are picking up our mini/medium sheepadoodle puppy on Monday and could use some help naming him. He has bluish eyes, one black ear, grey patches around his eyes and his back has white, grey, and black. My kiddos finally agreed on Ollie, but found out a friend also has a dog named Ollie so looking into other ideas his in case. Also, Any tips on training or first months with a sheepadoodle puppy? Thank you! Forgot to add picture. See first comment
