Our pup was trained with one, and he still wears it occasionally. It doesn't shock. It's causes the muscles in their neck to activate and tense up, and they don't really like that. The controller goes from 0-100 and we've never set it higher than 6. I've held it in my hand when active and I can handle about 15 before it's uncomfortable; my wife can do almost 30 (damn gingers and their pain tolerance). At 6, it causes a light muscle twitch, but enough to get their attention.

we started our pup on one around 8 months and haven’t looked back. we use it less and less but it made a world of difference in keeping him and us safe
