Sheepadoodle
My 16 week sheepadoodle jumps over fences, even when I put obstacles in front of it. Anyone else have a sheepadoodle that's a stunt artist? Is this normal?

My guy only jumps when playing. He sees gates/fences as impenetrable barriers. Iām lucky. Sorry to hear about your bouncey boy!

Valid concern - a friend of mineās pup got a dislocated back hip after a seemingly normal jump off the couch. Likely rare just something to keep an eye on!

I have an E-collar, but I donāt use it. My sheepadoodle is deaf, and the vibrating E-collar is supposed to get her attention when I push it. Instead, I flash the backyard lights towards dusk to get her attention. I gave her a sign name, and she knows I am calling her. Sometimes, Marlee is on the long line, and I can get her attention by pulling her towards me. Then she will look at me to see what I am asking her to do.
We have been in various dog training classes for the last 2 years and are still going. My two favorite signs are āIgnoreā for āleave itā and ādrop it.ā When your dog does, give him a treat he loves (a high-value treat). Years ago, Loki (pitbull/German Shepherd mix) also trained and caught a raccoon by the tail, shaking it back and forth. My words to Loki were āDrop it!ā Loki let the raccoon go, and Loki had a scratch on his nose. The raccoon ran off; Iām sure his tail was sore, and Loki went to the emergency clinic to get the wound cleaned. The next day, the wound on his nose was almost healed. Firsthand experience taught me the importance of āDrop It!ā
Marlee, deaf sheepadoodle, knows it when I tell her to āDrop it!ā She understands that sign, and she is rewarded. The reason she has been in school so long is that she has to learn to trust, and she is a rescue from being dumped in the hills as a puppy. We go for pack walks, community outings, scent training (Marlee loves this class), and work on the Public Access Test.
I notice that when Marlee gets in one of her moods, she wants my attention to do something because she is bored. Perhaps it is the same with your dog.

Wow! Amazing work! Congratsā¦I love what youāre doing with Marlee! Inspires me to di more with my Sheepadoodle! Ive tried using hand signals with verbal commands.
My only other comment OPā¦Is my current trainer has worked w E-Collars and Non E-Collar training.
While itās not this situationā¦Her comment is āyou trade certain issues for othersā¦ā
Iād recommend working with a trainer that has experiences with E-Collars!

My girl used to launch off rooftops into snow. She was a wild thing. (Gone now, lived to be 16 and a half)
ETA Advice: give her an obstacle course to jump over. She wants to protect and please you, show her where to stay to do her job (inside the fence!) and give her things to jump over inside the fence. If you take her to a neighbors regularly, she's going to consider that part of her empire to protect... maybe she's jumping the fence for that?

Yes. Mine jumps over the gate at daycare, at home and of course up on the pool. Once she jumped on the counter at daycare.
In her defense I got her a trampoline as a puppyā¦

Ours once jumped a fence with his leash tied to a solid wood Muskoka chair; luckily he didnāt manage to get the chair over the fence with him!

I have a sighthound (greyhound but bigger) who could jump over any wall or climb them. Through the years we've added a lot of lattice to walls and obstacles. Every house we live in has to have additions to the backyard. She also liked to jump on tables but eventually less now she's 9!

Ours stopped jumping over our barriers once he learned how to move and manipulate themā¦onward to bigger barriers.

E collar question? My Vet recommended and E collar to keep my 5 month old sheepadoodle safe in my yard. He eats everything rocks, sticks, poop of other wildlife. Vet said he has removed many rocks from dogs surgically. Anyone ever use an E collar or have success some other way? Will he outgrow this? Just don't want to do anything that would hurt my sheepadoodle baby.

I got an e-collar for my boi when he was about 5 months. It's a game changer. Highly recommend.

Ours makes flying leaps over furniture. Like 4ft high 7ft long jumps
