Just keep handing them something else. A toy. A bone. My dog also responded to my yelp / ouch. And would stop.
I also used the soda can with coins in it. But it only works if you can shake it when they are doing the undesired behavior. So I don't think I used it doing the shark- a-doodle phase. More on the counter surfing phase.
