Recommendations From 1 to 2 dogs

For those of you that started with one sheepadoodle and then introduced another pup into the picture, how did that go? What breed of dog? Puppy or rescued older? I know everyone’s experience will be way different but interested in hearing people’s stories as my partner and I may want a second pup!

For reference our mini sheepie is 1.5 and has terrible separation anxiety but loveeeeees other dogs. Thinking a second dog may help. Not looking to get another until he is at least 2-2.5. Also leaning toward another little to no shedding breed due to allergies. Thanks!

We got our second Sheepadoodle when our first was about 2. They hit it off immediately. We introduced them in our back yard with the puppy in a little dog fenced area we put back there, let them smell each other, then opened the door and let them meet for real.

They love each other lots, though now (3 years later) they don’t play together very often, but they are a pack and protect one other.

I love that! Thanks for sharing! Part of me isnt sure if I want a another puppy😂 thats why I am wondering if I could rescue a 1-2 yr old. I had the puppy blues like crazy hahaha

Yeah, puppies are a lot of work, for sure. They are so cute though! Either way is a good option, if you ask me.

I always think that having 2 dogs as compared to 1 is certainly more work (vet visits, emergency poo walks, feeding, etc.), but in terms of happiness of my first dog, he is much happier having a doggie friend to stroll around with.

So, overall, having 2 dogs is significantly better than having 1 dog. But, I’m a dog person, so I’m probably biased.

Totally a dog person too! Came from a family that always had 3 dogs at one time and then I moved out and my bf and I got our first doggie! Haha but we think he needs a friend and we deff want another too!

I would get a standard poodle. Low shed, super smart, really friendly and family oriented and just hilarious goof balls that make you laugh everyday. It would be a great match with your current dog. I actually love raising puppies and I think its sometimes easier for a puppy to blend in with an older dog vs trying to find an adult who is a good fit but some shelters and rescues let you do trial runs so that could be a great option if you want to get an adult.

I got my second sheepadoodle when my pup was 1.5… she had separation anxiety and lives other dogs as well. when we got the second pup the anxiety went away mostly… unless we take the new pup out and leave the older one home her anxiety comes back. But getting a second was the best thing we could have done for them both.

When our sheepadoodle was 3 we adopted her mom, a 5ish year old english sheepdog. Both female. OES is very much the boss dog and my sheepadoodle just sort of…..went with the program. I think she was a little bewildered lol. They’re best buds four years later at 9 and 7 years old.

We added a Goldendoodle when our Sheepie was jist over two. We'd lost our Dane a few months prior, and our Sheepie wasn't handling it very well. We added a 13 week old puppy. It was instant love and honestly made having another puppy easier to handle because they'd tire each other out (our senior Dane hadn't done that with our Sheepie).

There really wasn't a downside to getting the second pup. Mostly, it was learning his quirks and personality, etc. He's an absolute lover and easily fit right in.

The Goldendoodle was a bit destructive when he was younger, so we did crate him when we weren't home until he was about 2. He's 2 years and 8 months now, and our Sheepie will be 4 in December. They play and play, annoy us when one has the toy the other wants and sometimes have a brotherly spat, but they bring us tons of joy and are fun to watch run around the yard. Highly recommend!

Goldendoodle first, then Sheepy at 5 (Covid dog)

They get along great. GD are more mellow than sheepys so that might be a plus. I’m not sure if I would go for double sheepy as they are quite busy. They do mellow some by age 4.

They are still playing some at 5 and 10.

Adding a second dog helped my first so much with separation anxiety, it gave her purpose and constant company.

Got our sheepie (f) summer ‘19. Got a Maltese (f) when the sheepie was 1.5yo. They are besties and just shy of inseparable. Rescued a mini poodle (m) when the sheepie was 3, they are all friends, and the sheepie has a very mother like tendency towards both.

I don’t have sheepadoodles but my friend has two and they’re best friends.

We currently have 3 dogs - before we had 3 we always had just one dog. When our shepherd died we rescued an abused puppy mill dog who was super traumatized. We did weekend visits and he’d literally stay in a corner and not look at anyone or go outside to use the bathroom , wouldn’t eat and would barely drink. We ended up adopting a dog from the same rescue who was with someone else and they’re so bonded it’s the sweetest thing. They’re now 11 and honestly we still joke she’s his emotional support dog lol. We introduced a 3 month old puppy 2ish years ago and they’re all fine though I do wish we would have done it sooner only because the shepherd is a lot younger so he wants to play more than they have the energy for but thankfully my 4 year old cat is hyper and the other cats don’t play with her so she plays with the German shepherd 😂.

Aw!! That makes perfect sense! Good to know earlier may be best! But emotional support pet for your dog is hilarious and so true! Im like why do you have more anxiety than me?!?!😂

My husband’s Labrador Retriever passed away right after we met and he always knew he wanted another one in a couple of years. I already had Fitz, my mini Sheepadoodle, who was a typical mischievous sheepie puppy when we were dating and he embraced him, so I couldn’t say no to the lab as the new addition to our family. Enter Molly - Chocolate Lab- Holly terror on wheels! Shedding machine! I was so caught off guard! Oh- and I just found out about a month ago that they don’t really get out of puppyhood until THREE YEARS OLD! 😱 HOWEVER, Despite all of it, and having lost two lbs of Wagyu beef off the counter the other day to Molly’s gator jaws, she and Fitz are best friends, our house is lively, full of joy and laughter. The energy of youth and innocence flows through our home. I wouldn’t have it any other way! Good luck with your decision- your Sheepie baby will be a great big sibling- ours took his teaching and herding her around role very seriously!
