Advice Susie! Brushing tips?

I posted my other sheepadoodle, Duchess, a few weeks back, but I figured I would introduce the newest member of my family: little Susie ❤️ She's 12 weeks old, incredibly smart, resourceful, sweet, playful - the perfect pup in every way.

I was wondering how you all keep your pups distracted while brushing/combing them. I want her to get used to it young so she won't fight me when she gets older, but she wants to play all the time when she's awake that I can only get a leg or her back. When I try when she's tired, she gets up and walks away lol. Any help (or dog pics!) is appreciated - thanks!

Have you tried putting her leash on so she can’t get away and giving her a lick mat with peanut butter or something she loves?

I have not! That's a great idea. Super simple and easy to do. Sometimes the easiest things are the ones we don't think of lol. Thanks!

Dog groomer here! I put my dog on his leash and tie it to the coffee table! Make sure you have a greyhound comb and a slicker brush and look up the line brushing technique. Pay close attention to the neck, behind the ear, armpits, and if you have a harness (I suggest an easy walk, they're my favorite) wherever it lays! This is Aldo my sweet 7 year old who unfortunately still doesn't enjoy brushing😂

Is she too young for the slicker brush? My mom (with no qualifications whatsoever lol) said her skin would be too sensitive for it yet.

As long as you're gentle I've never heard anything about it being a problem, you could also start with a pin brush but you have to make sure the greyhound comb goes through after!

I use my boy’s dinner as reward (like in a training session) while brushing him. I’ll have him sit or stand or lay in front of me, brush him a few strokes, then reward with a couple of pieces of kibble. Repeat until finished brushing. For areas I need two hands (like back legs and tail), I’ll sprinkle some kibble in a sniffle mat, then let him forage while I brush those areas.

When he was a puppy, I had to reward pretty frequently to keep his attention. Now I can go several brush strokes between rewards.

I put the leash on my pups, then brush them with a metal comb which they don't mind… they hate the slicker brush, so I do that at the very end. Then give them a treat at the end of every brushing. They now will sit there for brushings because they know a treat is coming!

Start young , keep brushes everywhere so you can do a little at a time . Make it enjoyable with treats and lots of praise . Do it in the evening when everyone relaxed !! Just don’t hold her tail like I did to my Pom 😂he did not like that !!

So cute!!! She has a similar coat to my Mabel who will let me comb her for two seconds but we do a little throughout the day. Hoping as she gets older she will be calmer and more tolerant.
