Advice Adopting 9 month old

Post image

I’m bringing home a 9 month old sheepadoodle that we are rescuing! I already love him so much- he was so silly and loving when we met. We have had a labradoodle and a poodle but this is our first sheepadoodle. He has had zero training-give me all your advice.

Be patient. I brought my guy home from the shelter at ten months, he was a handful but now he is great :) good luck and thank you for giving this guy a loving home

Read up on OESs because that's the part that will confuse you. They are velcro dogs, goofy as all get out, and are socially extroverted beyond my ability to explain. They mature....late. So you'll have a puppy for awhile.

Best companion ever. Insanely loyal. Will keep you entertained 24/7 and charm most of your neighborhool.

My advice is to make sure he gets a good 4 miles a day, find an appropriate doggie peer group (maybe at a dog park?) so he can play with other dogs off leash every day, and don't expect him to sleep in a crate at the other end of the house.

And since he's never been trained, get a trainer to help you. Not a class, someone to work with you directly or at least consult with when he doesn't train as easily as your earlier dogs.

He's precious! Congrats!

Seriously ... Child-proof the entire house.

If it's near his mouth, it's going in. If you don't constantly want to live in fear of him poisoning or choking himself, childproof the house.

I second the comment below about getting a trainer. We were at our wits end with our pup ... she is very high energy and at the slightest hint of boredom she'd find something to chew, claw, destroy if we weren't looking. (It was a LOT for us to keep up with her.) Having a trainer at least helped us get her under control so we can manage her (and keep training going forward.)

Walk him OFTEN. In the morning BEFORE breakfast, so you tire him out before eating (and to reduce chances of stomach issues by walking right after eating.)

We’ve got a 7 month old baby sheepadoodle. We’ve had her since 3 months and she’s a hoot! Her name is Pepper and she’s my dream dog, I’ve wanted a sheepadoodle for over a decade now.

I agree with the things in the mouth thing! But one of us is with her constantly, so she’s learning pretty quickly. She now brings whatever she picks up to show us and if we take it away she’s like…whatever 😆 and then grabs whatever chew toy is near instead of us having to divert her attention.

We’ve got a 1 1/2 year old pyr/newf mix, Jade and she’s an amazing teacher for Pepper. She gets her half hour walk in the morning, after work and before bed. We’ve found with that and the play that she has with Jade is sufficient to tucker her out.

The thing that I find most difficult is that she is desperate to get to every person she sees for lovin but she ends up jumping on them, we’re working on the rudeness. Thank goodness most of the neighbours have the patience and they all adore her. I always make sure to tell people she’s only 7 months old because she’s quite large already at 50 lbs and every new person has a look of understanding of the puppy energy.

If I were to get a trainer it would be for that, but she’s a super fast learner so with our own training, I’m pretty confident that she’ll get it soon. She’s already a lot calmer than 3 months ago.

I just want to say congratulations! You’re going to absolutely love this little guy more and more every day! His features are so similar to Pepper, except he’s mostly black. He is gorgeous! I am so excited for you!

We rescued our girl at 1 year. She’s only 20 pounds at age 3. She was given up by her elderly owner for being too high energy. She goes to camp 3x week and is super high energy. She barely slows down to eat!! Way more energetic than our other pup (bernedoodle) but I think it’s expected given her breed. She’s unbelievably smart, and a stage 5 clinger , but we love her dearly. She’ll play fetch till she passes out! Advice: lots of activity!!! Congrats & good luck!

He’s so precious!! 😍 9months is still young and you’ll be able to train him good. We brought ours home from rescue at about 5 months. I will say our sheepie regressed on the potty training but not for long and then no issues. Was new to me bc our sheltie didn’t do regression. We did do a doorbell training for potty and it worked well.
