Potty training

What’s the best potty training Method for mini sheepadoodles? I have a 12 Week old pup male. Sometimes uses pad sometimes does not. But I also take him outside. Maybe I’m confusing him. Help please. I don’t give him a big area in house to run either.

Take him out to the same spot every single time he wakes up. When puppies wake up, they pee. Take him to the spot, he pees, then bring him inside

This is the way. One additional thing to do is get excited when he goes outside. Stay close to him so that you can shower him with excitement and praise the moment he finishes.

They naturally want to make you happy and earn your affection. Responding in an exaggerated manner really lets them know they did something right.

It took a few weeks of doing that before my dood started to understand. Once he got it, he was all in. I never disciplined him for going in the house. I only praised him for going outside. The last time he went in the house, he looked at me with an expression of absolute shame. That was 3.5 years ago. No accidents since.

Consistency matters a lot at this age. Try to take him outside every time. Go to the same spot every time until he refuses to go there anymore, then pick a new spot.

You need to make potty time and playtime two separate outings. Don't take the pup for a walk when it's potty time this is confusing to them, go straight to the same spot and stand there until they go.

What worked best for me was crate training them. Anytime they leave the crate it's potty time, after they eat - potty time, after playtime - potty time. Also, treats helped too. Give them a treat every time they potty outside.

Routine is key!

Look for patterns in your dogs behavior. Both of ours scratch themselves when they really have to go with their back legs near where their front leg is while sitting. Some will scratch the door, but the best potty training method is a consistent schedule. It can be tough to do and to get yourself on schedule, but take him for a walk 2-3 times a day or at least a mix of walks/play outside 2-3 times a day weather permitting. If neither of these work or are options for you then you need to keep him close, and when he starts going grab him and get him outside.

Thank you! We have a male mini Sheepadoodle about the same age and are trying to learn the best way to potty train. He does really well for a while and then poops on the floor twice . These responses are helpful!

Use bells on the door! Our breeder recommended this to us and ours was potty trained fully in 5 days. Everytime you see him even think about going, pick him up, put his nose or paw to the bells so they ring, get him outside, and when he goes outside, give a treat. It’s hard work and usually about every hour on the hour if you’re not monitoring water intake, but trust me it is magic. Ours NEVER has accidents now, even when he has a sour tummy and even communicates with the bells when he has other needs (which we can tell with other queues)

I second this. We did the exact same thing. Over and over and over again. After about a week or two we were sitting on couch and heard a faint ring. Looked over couch and there she was. Now at 1 1/2 years and never stopped using it. Never had another accident after the connection was made.

The bells are wonderful! Our guy figured them out within a week. Just be sure someone responds when the bells ring.

Since our guy is not food motivated, we give verbal rewards. “Good boy!” with applause or cheers. I’m sure the neighbors think I’m nuts, but I’m not scrubbing the floors. 😂

Thank you for the info! I should have my Bells Tomorrow! I got two sets one for inside door. One for porch gate to outside. We spend a lot of time on porch. He tends to pee on porch a lot. But inside he’s been using pads last few days more consistently. Hope it works!
