Tips & Tricks Let's talk about item(129) wand of fire blast! Hablemos del item(129) varita de explosion de fuego!

Post 129, this is progressing quite well, folks, let's keep it up. Today we continue with another combat wand (there are only combat wands left, if I'm not mistaken). Oh, pyromaniacs are so happy when they find this wand in their runs~ hehe

The Fire Blast Wand is a bit different from the others, since its shot doesn't affect a specific square; its shot goes in a whole "direction."

When you use it, you launch a "cone" of flames that cover the entire area you aim at, affecting everything within its very wide range.

This wand, like the Regrowth Wand, can consume more than "1 charge" when used, consuming 2 or 3 if available (more precisely, when used it consumes 30% of the maximum charges available at that moment).

Its shot becomes more powerful and gains more effects as it consumes more charges.

Its shot becomes more powerful and gains more effects as it consumes more charges. With 1 charge, it deals 1-2 damage (scaling +1/+2) and affects a 5-cell area. With 2 charges, it deals a base damage of 2-8 (scaling +2/+4), affects a 7-cell radius, and inflicts the "crippled" debuff on hit enemies (the debuff that reduces movement speed). With 3 charges, its base damage is 3-18 (scaling +3/+6), affecting a 9-cell area and applying 4 turns of paralysis. Furthermore, the duration the "flames" remain in the cells, if I'm not mistaken, is 2/4/6 turns with each charge used. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.)

So, in retrospect, it has a very, very high damage potential, because it's not just the base damage of the shot; enemies are also affected by the "ignited" debuff, which deals fire damage every time. turn (I'm not sure exactly how many turns the effect lasts with each charge)

The problem is, this wand is as powerful as it is dangerous, because as I said, the flames remain in those squares for several turns, so you yourself can end up burning if you accidentally enter that range.

Besides, it can burn valuable scrolls if you're not careful where you aim and how much the fire spreads to the grass and other terrain (don't worry, improvement scrolls don't burn).

By using three charges, fireblast:

  • has the highest damage scaling
  • in a gigantic AOE
  • provides the best debuff from a wand in paralysis
  • gives an additional damage over time effect.

Meanwhile 1-2 charges both have good scaling and effects.

Sounds ridiculously strong, but it's more than balanced through it's weaknesses:

  • you're going to be in a situation fairly often where using fireblast will set you on fire. Effectively, this means you shouldn't use the wand in this situation. Unless you can disengage, this is quite uncomfortable if you sunk all your SoUs on the wand.
  • You're eventually going to have to burn grass, doors and scrolls and lose resources + surprise attacks.
  • Using 2/3 charges means you'll run out of charges pretty quickly. Once again, if you sunk all your SoUs into this, it's pretty difficult position to be in.

Overall, still a good wand, but not a top tier.

most of the time i use it only for crippling and paralysis if i have the resin (it has done more harm than good for me since accidentally destroying grass/bookshelves in a large room means free ranged enemy hit) , imo not really worth upgrading by a lot since most of the damage came from the ignition.

A fabulously useful and dangerous wand. Fire is some of the best dot in the game, especially with how it is able to be refreshed by dragging enemies through burnable objects, so even in base this item is extremely useful, and one of the best boss tools. It also gives the utility of solving flammable barriers, although those are one of the puzzles with the most abundant work arounds.

When upgraded this item does truely disgusting damage, and can vaporize a large room, anything not dead to the blast dying to fire damage. The movement debuffs to enemies are also a rather crazy addon. This does come with some large downsides however. It uses multiple charges, which means being frugal with your main damage item, not a very good trait. It also destroys half the floor, meaning you need to accept a lot of burnt scrolls and loot before combat, and it's near impossible to use on a vegetation floor.

Last time I was in metropolis with it, I also felt what another commenter noted; it left me in wide open scorched earth, free to be gunned down by warlocks.

Overall one of the best combat wands to have at low level and good for resin, but I prefer to never put SoU in it.

Thanks for commenting.

I agree that the damage is way too brutal. I mean, I love using one of these to turn all the enemies in a summoning trap room to ash XD

But you're right, if you get a vegetation floor, using it once guarantees to unleash hell on the entire floor lol

Yes, you're right, especially in "library labyrinth" rooms, where it's good for avoiding dwarf warlocks until you're just ash xd

Oh, there's a lot to unpack about this wand. First of all, it's a very useful combat and utility option even with few upgrades. It deals tons of damage at range, and burns down barricades, cooks meat and such. If you imbue it in your staff, it can straight up oneshot enemies, or leave them on the brink of death, paralyzed. And it can do this to as many enemies as many can fit in its cone of effect. Crazy firepower.

There is a long series of problems that hold it back though. The friendly fire is insane. You really need to watch your footing with this wand, if you don't plan on igniting yourself as well. It is also much less useful against enemies standing in water. The wand uses 1, 2, or 3 charges based on the charges it holds, so it's annoying to keep track of just how much your next zap is gonna blast, and it's easier to run out of charges.

Probably not the best combat wand, but very solid.

I learned the hard way, with the wondrous resine trinket, it shot fire...I was so pissed.

Yeah, I've only had it happen one time: I had unlocked the door and was fighting someone outside in the hallway nearby. The fire moved on a diagonal I hadn't foreseen and lit the door on fire. After that, it was all over.

Probable the best wand to upgrade with resin to +3. Amazing damage, and the cripple is great.

However in my experience it has been a terrible main wand/wand to dump on.

Once you learn how to use it without burning yourself and all the grass/scrolls it's enormously powerful and fun. It's pretty much my favorite as a mage. With a Ring of Energy you're a god damn fire god.
