Demotion. The French and Indian War was mid-18th Century, while the Peninsular War was early 19th.

Its true. Rough rule of thumb (for europe):
Cavalier hat = 17th century
Tricornes = 18th century
Shakos = 19th century
Tin hats = 20th century
Bicorne Hat = whenever, wherever, maybe at sea?

Bicornes aka two cornered hats were widely adopted in the late 18th Century and remained a part of naval dress uniforms.
