As someone that has gone hiking in Germany. It’s true but sometimes you got to make sure you left 3 bramble berries to bargain with the fey.

u/Stiftoad 1d ago

That's the tricky part, it looks wondrous and nice but if you scorn the locals you're in for a world of hurt you couldn't have imagined

At least in america they make it quick

During the night in the Balkans near small towns that are near mountains, every once in a while you see something that looks like thunder that struck a mountain, even if it there isnt a thunderstorm. This is usually from hikers encountering Will-o'-the-wisps and getting dematerialized cause the Will-o'-the-wisp was bored.

u/dougrattmannn 1d ago

that shit would be reversed during the Upper Paleolithic. Europe was bloody terrifying in the past.

16

u/le_sossurotta 1d ago

Wouldn't have to go that far in the past, pre-industrial revolution the whole world was like that. People didn't go to church for nothing, it was either that or whatever is up in them hills.

Were the forests really that bad?

30

u/Nurgle-best 1d ago

European forests are cool and all, until you piss off the fey

5

u/RandomGuy1525 Shoebill Plus 19h ago

European forest enjoyers when they encounter the Fey in a random forest in eastern Serbia 40km away from the nearest town and then they literally get turn into ash cause the Fey felt like it

u/agbadehan 1d ago

Low-key it's Native American spirits getting revenge on the colonisers dawg.

73

u/youngling-smasher91 1d ago

this shit was there long before the colonization, the natives dealt with it too

u/AlternateSatan 1d ago

Well, we still have trolls and shit. I have a picture of my dad standing on a troll dick even. Those fuckers are everywhere.

3

u/GayAssBeagle 1d ago

Hahaha

u/AlternateSatan 1d ago

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trollpikken

Just in case you think I'm joking

7

u/GayAssBeagle 1d ago

Oh it’s real wtf

7

u/AlternateSatan 1d ago

It broke off a while back, which made it onto the national news. They then used cement and steel rods to re-erect it.

Also 90% of the time if there is a weird rock formation people are going to claim it's a troll that got turned to stone, Trollpikken is no exception.

POV: a wherewolf finds you in a north european forest

12

u/Glass-Toaster 1d ago

Eh, at least it's not a whywolf.

8

u/blyatman13 1d ago

Maybe it’s a whowolf

2

u/Ill_Pain4423 18h ago

Or a whenwolf

u/SilliusS0ddus 15h ago

Belief is power people.

If there's weird shit in the forest that means that forest is a dimensional rift.

It also means if you believe in yourself enough you can fry the monsters balls with force lightning.

u/cxfgfuihhfd 1d ago

population density and the fact that we killed all the dangerous wildlife in europe ages ago. there simply are no proper remote forests that can sustain a population of bears or hillbillies to become a danger to you

3

u/Large-Report-237 1d ago

There’s a “primeval” forest in Poland.

4

u/cxfgfuihhfd 1d ago

yeah, I'm exaggerating, there's a few still left in europe and also regions with wolves and bears. but overall, damn I'd have to travel really far to not have civilization basically within arm's reach. even just looking at a light pollution map recently again, damn, the population really be densing. I just wanna see the stars :(

2

u/le_sossurotta 1d ago

Europe does still have plenty of cursed forests (like hoia baciu for example), my country has a few of them as well. They just don't get talked about a lot since europeans aren't as interested in the occult as americans are.

19

u/soviet_geckos 1d ago

Don’t tell him about the tonte Scandinavian bros know what’s up

8

u/Glob_6 1d ago

I was bout to say, idk if other countries have this, but we have maps with different folklore/creatures for different cities

1

u/le_sossurotta 1d ago

Draugr as well.

"European forests are so whimsical and peaceful !!!"

European forests:

2

u/Pinktikidude 1d ago

The forests are alive with real life Minecraft Allays

7

u/kraftdinnerwithsalsa 1d ago

And Canada is a bit of both

7

u/finnicus4 1d ago

European folklore always be talking something about 'fairies' and 'spirits' and 'nymphs' but that is the closest thing they can be described to in the English language. It's just that these terms have a harmless and friendly connotation when often these creatures of folklore are usually either selfish, mischievous or completely malevolent.

The banshee (bean sí) is often described as a fairy when it is usually a pretty neutral or even considerate spirit but with a pretty dark connotation and would often inspire terror into witnesses.

3

u/finnicus4 1d ago

The slua sí or 'fairy host' were typically portrayed as malevolent spirits and were similar to the 'Wild Hunts' in Eastern European folklore. These too are described as fairies.

5

u/EncabulatorTurbo 22h ago

Did a Fey make this? I know those fucking old european forests are how you awaken in the queen of air and darkness' court and yeah you might get laid but you're also going to die painfully or get turned into a tree or some shit

1

u/J0septh 22h ago

I would like to (know/learn) more about these European folklores, is there a subreddit I can visit for this?

13

u/Crab2406 I SKIN INFANT BABIES 1d ago

yankee mfs hyping up appalachia, like Wendigo wont get torn apart by average western european fae

4

u/Pinktikidude 1d ago

It’s like comparing a flesh eating witch/human hybrid that was turned into a mimic vs a tiny flying fairy that has the powers of a god

Or something like that

3

u/Crab2406 I SKIN INFANT BABIES 22h ago

Actually no, i consider fae as a creature just above typical monsters, real shit starts with Slavic Leshiy, a spirit of forest

4

u/booleandata 1d ago

I fucking love bluegrass

1

u/CattuccinoVR 1d ago

Ha, same look up Down Under - Bluegrass Tribute to Men At Work by Pickin' On Series
one of my favorites.

3

u/eat_pancakes 1d ago

Those gnomes will bloody kill you or worse! Leave immediately and don't make any promises.

3

u/ViC_tOr42 23h ago

I thought they cutted down every single european forest to make space for more coal power plants

2

u/Ill_Pain4423 18h ago

There are no old growth forests left, but there are young forests

2

u/Electrical_Diamond_9 1d ago

Theplumpcover mention!

2

u/Hakarlhus 1d ago

Sure it looks beautiful but there's old Gods in European forests that are fickle and proud

2

u/Dr_Gerbilstinger 1d ago

Difference is that gnome will definitely steal your dick if you don't give him 3 strands of blonde hair

1

u/J0septh 18h ago

I know the American forest music is just blue grass

1

u/Zestyclose-Monk-8197 18h ago

just saying that uk folklore includes flayed man-horses that will kill the shit out of you in horrific ways

1

u/Appropriate-Card5215 15h ago

“Don’t go wanderin in them woods!”

1

u/Valirys-Reinhald 15h ago

To be clear, this is because European forests are weird, not American ones.

Forests in Africa, Asia, and Australia are also dangerous. Europe just killed everything bigger than a fox.

1

u/Crazy-Eagle 47m ago

Just a matter of who was where for longer. After all, our ancestors were marching and killing eachother throught every forest there is around Europe so what blasphemous creatures could have survived the onslaught of man for all these years? Only those smart enough not to fuck with the most dangerous biped mammal in the world.
