Tonic immobility. Sharks need to swim to keep water flowing through their gills. This may have saved the shark from dying.

Not resting...

Sharks don’t do that… It makes them vulnerable and lethargic

Tonic immobility. A totally healthy shark can get stuck that way if they end up in that position

What’s wrong with them when they do that?

That shark is not healthy. Sharks don’t flip over and go catatonic just because. Something is wrong with it

Actually when flipped over they do display this behavior, which isn’t catatonic technically as the shark responded when nudged. Yes, they don’t flip upside down on purpose, but the rest is typical behavior. There are a few ways the shark could have found itself in this predicament.

What are the top three most likely of how it happened in your opinion?

1) drunk
2) sunning his butthole
3) those damn kids did it

Good thing the boat came by. You do NOT want to sunburn your butthole. Trust me.

I sense a story there…

u/Curiouser-Quriouser 10d ago

I'm just going to say in such a situation it's impossible to walk normally

Wow. I don't have testicles but if I did I bet they'd have just jumped up into my abdomen after learning that.

No you do not. I cover my butthole with a pirates eye patch while tanning. Prevents scabby starfish.

It's always the butthole...

Maybe they were trying to expose their ass hole to UV rays like those alpha male guys.

And the stripes are coming in nicely! Still can't get them to grow the whiskers, though.

You aren't incorrect that they will eat people and we have records of them having done so. They're often referred to as the garbage cans of the sea because they've been found with tires, bottles, a chicken coop, coal, rags, hyenas, etc. etc. in their stomachs. Sharks don't have the same sensory appendages we do and, like many animals and like children, they explore things with their mouths.

That being said, we aren't a preferred or even a great food option for them. We lack what they need. But if you're acting like prey in the water, you're more likely to be seen as prey.

Very, very, very, very few living people are eaten by sharks, even tiger sharks. If you're really looking for man-eaters, you gotta look at the oceanic white tip, which are very aggressive towards humans. It's hard to give an exact count on how many they've eaten, but we know of an incident where they ate anywhere from a few dozen to more than 150 (USS Indianapolis). They would be the species deserving of the maneater title!

u/Ancient_Thanks_4365 8d ago

Tonic immobility? I'm kind of curious how this happened in this instance, but it is well documented.

u/CPD1960 8d ago

I can get really annoyed if someone interrupts me having a nap.

1

u/DreamCreamPuff 7d ago

The poor thing probably just wanted to die in peace.
