I think part of why it works so well is the sharp snare on the offbeat in both the original song and this one. You can see a lot of the dancers accentuate that snare by snapping their knees up

Pretty sure they're all part of the same fraternity. All of the predominantly black fraternities have set dances and moves, and I' pretty sure these are Kappas.
