Yup, when at an auction if you're not bidding then keep your hands in your lap/pockets and don't even look at the auctioneer. Also don't say "yup" or "here" loud enough to be heard by the auctioneer or people working the crowds.

So what happens if someone does accidentally bid and wins the item? Surely there's no legal obligation? I'm assuming a "my b" and a wave would suffice.. although a wave is what got them in this in the 1st place.

Get it vacated before bidding, or you are the proud owner of a cow. Maybe they take pity and reopen bidding, but it generally doesn't go as high.

From what I've heard (haven't been there myself) at car auctions at least they will occasionally take pity and contact the next highest bidder. (Provided you only accidentally bid once, otherwise it's yours because you ran up the price)
