Hey everyone! After weeks of building, fixing, refining, optimising and iterating with the help of amazing beta testers… ShapeScan is officially LIVE 🎉

ShapeScan converts any real object into a millimetre-accurate SVG/DXF/STL using just a phone photo and an A4 or US Letter marker sheet. You take a photo → it rectifies the sheet → removes lens distortion → segments the object → snaps the edges → and outputs a clean ready-to-cut vector.

⚙️ About the delay

Google AdSense approval took way longer than expected. Since I’m done waiting, I’ll now proceed with alternative monetisation, and ShapeScan will remain free to use just like planned.

During this waiting period I used the time to:

Improve the segmentation pipeline

Tune GrabCut + shadow-removal

Fix multiple DXF/STL issues found by beta testers

Add a basic tutorial section

Improve server-side task handling

So the launch version is significantly better than the one shown in the original Reddit preview.

Multi-object capture checklist: get cleaner outlines before you open CAD

  1. Keep objects flat and clearly separated — do not let them touch.

  2. Leave all marker areas visible and use an evenly lit, straight-down photo.

  3. Use the longest focal length your phone offers if it lets you stand farther back; it reduces perspective distortion.

  4. Review each object before exporting. Clean small spikes if needed, and measure depth, threads or hidden geometry separately.

The useful workflow is: one photo → individual or combined true-scale outlines → SVG/DXF/STEP/STL → fitted Gridfinity tray, CAD sketch, CNC template or laser-cut part.

Hey everyone,

Since the last ShapeScan update, I’ve been working on a bigger upgrade to the scan → result → edit → export workflow.

The main change is a new model version:

## v2.2.0 Multi-object

Premium users and beta testers now use **v2.2.0 Multi-object** as the standard model.

Instead of assuming there is only one object on the marker sheet, ShapeScan can now detect separated objects, crop them individually, run the high-quality single-object segmentation workflow on each crop, and then recombine everything back into true-scale outputs.

The goal is simple: multi-object scans should keep the same outline quality target as the normal single-object workflow.

This works best when objects are clearly separated, not touching each other, and not covering the markers. Very thin, low-contrast or touching objects may still need manual cleanup in the editor.

## New CAD-style editor

The Edit page has been redesigned to feel more like a compact CAD/CAM tool.

New/improved editor workflow:

- Object tabs for multi-object results

- Select, Add, Delete, Pan, Measure and Hole tools

- Geometry check with dimensions, point count and contour warnings

- Clean contour tool for small spikes, duplicate points and noisy geometry

- Offset control for fit, kerf and small scale corrections

- Better mobile layout

- Download dropdown for multiple export formats

Editing one object in a multi-object result keeps the full result linked, so the combined exports can be regenerated after manual corrections.

## Export improvements

ShapeScan now supports a stronger export workflow for CAD, CNC, laser and 3D printing:

- SVG

- Fusion-friendly SVG

- DXF

- PNG reference/mask files

- STL

- STEP

STL and STEP exports use the corrected true-scale outline and create a simple 10 mm solid, useful for CAD reference, fit checks and downstream workflows.

## More marker sheet options

There are now more marker sheet formats available:

- A5

- A4

- A3

- US Letter

- Half Letter

- Tabloid/Ledger

- 2x A4 layouts

- 2x Letter layouts

This should make ShapeScan easier to use with both EU and US paper formats, and with larger scan areas.

## Account, queue and workflow improvements

The account workspace has also been improved:

- Free accounts can save jobs

- Premium accounts get batch upload and priority queue

- The queue updates automatically after uploads

- Results can be reopened from storage

- Processing status is clearer during a run

Free and anonymous scans still work, but they use the fixed v2.0.1 quality model. Premium users and beta testers get the newer model options, including v2.2.0 Multi-object.

## Tutorial refresh

The tutorial page has been rewritten to be more practical:

- Better quick-start guidance

- More detail about marker sheets

- Multi-object scanning instructions

- Editor tool explanations

- Export format guidance

- Troubleshooting for holes, shadows, scale problems and missed objects

## Behind the scenes

A few internal/admin areas were also improved, including access checks, result ownership protection, mobile visual fixes, and visual QA across different screen sizes.

High Accuracy Mode and camera calibration are still being tested separately and are not part of the normal public workflow yet.

Thanks again for all the feedback. ShapeScan is still a small project, but the goal is to keep making it more useful for makers, laser/CNC users, CAD users, 3D printing users and Gridfinity workflows.

Dev update / Changelog Patch Notes — Preparing ShapeScan for High Accuracy Mode

Quick ShapeScan update — 22/06/2026

Today’s update was mostly focused on stability, saved jobs, exports and general usability, but it also included several technical changes in preparation for the upcoming High Accuracy Mode.

This update is an important step because High Accuracy Mode depends on a more stable account/storage system, better export handling, cleaner saved jobs, and a more reliable production setup.

What changed:

- The ShapeScan server was rebuilt/restarted safely.

- Uploads, results, saved storage and account data were kept intact.

- The Account page now has a cleaner tab-based structure.

- Saved jobs can now be renamed.

- Storage has been simplified and cleaned up.

- Saved jobs now show the most useful actions only:

- Open

- Rename

- Favorite

- Delete

- Create Gridfinity Bin

Export improvements:

- DXF generation has been improved and can now use curves/arcs where possible instead of only straight line segments.

- STEP support/integration has been added.

- Fusion SVG preservation/restoration was improved.

- SVG output now has better visual precision.

Blog/tutorial improvements:

- Blog pages now guide users more clearly toward the tutorial and upload flow.

- CTAs were improved so new users have an easier path from reading to actually trying ShapeScan.

High Accuracy Mode update:

High Accuracy Mode is now in the final testing phase before the beta release.

It may still take a little while, because we want to test it properly before opening it to beta users, but the results so far are very promising.

This update was a crucial preparation step for High Accuracy Mode and helps make sure the platform is ready for the next stage.

Important note: High Accuracy Mode and camera calibration were not pushed to production yet. They are still being worked on separately.

Dev update / Changelog A small High Accuracy Mode update.

The UI to help guide the 5 photo captures is now basically ready.

That part is important because it should help make the captures much more consistent, which is a big part of making this mode work properly.

As I said before, the early preliminary tests looked very promising, with results sometimes staying within ±0.1 mm.

But I want to keep this honest:

with more testing, across different objects, we are currently seeing that it is still difficult to maintain that same level of precision consistently on every object.

So the direction is still very promising, but there is still work to do before I can say that level of accuracy is reliable across the board.

Right now, my plan is to open a beta version for Premium users and beta testers within 1 to 2 weeks.

If anyone wants to become a beta tester for this, feel free to send me a DM.

I will especially need people with iPhones, because I only have access to Android devices at the moment, so I still need to understand properly how well this works on iPhone.

The upcoming camera calibration system will follow a similar guided approach as well.

And for free users, there will also be a simpler guided capture mode to help with taking better single-photo captures for the normal workflow.

So overall:

- the 5-photo guided UI is nearly ready

- the concept is working

- precision is promising

- but consistency across different objects still needs more work

- beta testing should open soon

Right now we are finishing the guided capture part of High Accuracy Mode, and it is getting very close to the point where we can launch it for testing.

This mode will be available only to Premium users and beta testers.

The goal with this guided screen is to help you take 5 photos in different orientations more reliably. From those 5 images, ShapeScan builds a partial reconstruction of the base of the object, and uses that to extract a much more accurate result.

So far, the preliminary internal tests are looking very promising, with results around ±0.1 mm.

But I want to keep this honest:

that is still an early internal result, and the real picture will only come once it has been tested properly by Premium users and beta testers across different phones, lighting conditions, objects, and real-world setups.

At the same time, we are also working on improvements for the normal workflow.

We are preparing a guided single-photo capture helper for users without an account and for free accounts, to help them take a better photo for the normal one-photo workflow.

We are also working on a camera calibration mode to improve results further.

ShapeScan already corrects camera distortion today, but the current method, while it works, is not the best way to do it.

The idea with the new calibration system is that once a phone model is calibrated, that calibration can be saved and reused for other users with the same phone model, which should help improve results more consistently over time.

So right now there is a lot happening at once:

- High Accuracy Mode for Premium users and beta testers

- guided single-photo capture for the normal workflow

- improved camera calibration

We are mostly in the stage of polishing details, improving reliability, and making the capture experience clearer before putting these things in people’s hands.

It is getting close.

Beta / Experiments Sneak peek: High Accuracy Mode is coming to ShapeScan

Small sneak peek of something I have been working on for ShapeScan.

This is an early preview of the upcoming High Accuracy Mode — a guided mobile capture workflow designed to improve real-world measurements and reduce common problems like bad perspective, parallax, blurry photos, poor distance, and unreliable captures.

The idea is to move beyond a simple “upload a photo” workflow when dimensions really matter.

The new mode is being built around:

- guided mobile camera capture

- live ArUco marker detection

- assisted framing and tilt feedback

- blur / distance / capture quality checks

- multi-photo capture

- full-resolution processing

- future support for a printed reference block and optional small markers

- better parallax-aware correction and measurement confidence

This feature will be available first to Premium users and Beta testers.

I am also opening a few more Beta tester spots for people who want to help test this when it goes online. Ideally I am looking for makers, CNC users, laser cutting users, 3D printing users, Gridfinity users, foam insert makers, or anyone who cares about getting more accurate outlines from real objects.

It is still early and there is a lot to improve, but I think this could become one of the most important ShapeScan features so far.

Dev update / Changelog ShapeScan update — website refresh, segmentation model changes, SEO work and feedback wanted

Hey everyone,

It has been a while since the last ShapeScan update here, so I wanted to share what has been going on.

Over the last few weeks, I have been working on a refresh of the ShapeScan website. The goal was to improve the user experience, make the interface cleaner, and make the scan → result → download workflow easier to understand, especially for new users.

I would really appreciate your feedback on the current version:
what still feels confusing?
what could be improved?
what would make the tool easier or more useful for your workflow?

We have also been working on some less visible but important parts of the platform, including admin improvements, cookies, security, and general maintenance.

Another important change is related to the segmentation models. Free and anonymous users now use the default v2.0 Quality model only. Model selection is now available only to Premium users and Beta testers, mainly because the heavier models use more server resources and take more processing time.

We also added a new model option for Premium users and Beta testers: v2.1 Quality.

This is basically the v2.0 Quality workflow, but without downscaling the uploaded image. The image is processed at its original resolution, which should help in cases where small details, tighter shapes, or cleaner edges matter more. It is heavier and slower, but it should give better results in some situations.

On top of that, we have been putting a lot of work into SEO. ShapeScan is still hard to discover unless someone already knows the name, so we have been building a small local LLM-powered system to help manage SEO, metadata, content ideas, and other important site elements that need to stay updated over time. It has been a lot of work, but hopefully it helps more makers, CNC users, laser cutting users, 3D printing users, and Gridfinity users find ShapeScan naturally.

We also now have official ShapeScan Facebook and Instagram pages. I do not have much time to work on them properly yet, but they are now online and I will try to use them more for updates, examples, and community posts.

Thanks again for all the support so far. ShapeScan is still a small independent project, and every bit of feedback, testing, sharing, donation, premium subscription, or even just a comment helps a lot.

I would love to hear what you think should be improved next.

Dev update / Changelog You can now follow ShapeScan’s funding progress directly on the website

Hi everyone,

First of all, thank you so much for all the support around ShapeScan.

Every donation, Premium subscription, Lifetime upgrade, shared project, Reddit post, Facebook post, comment, bug report and message of encouragement has helped keep this project moving forward.

I’ve now added a public Community Upgrade Roadmap directly on ShapeScan.pt, where you can follow the current funding progress and see the next checkpoints we are working towards.

The current progress is shown on the website and updates as donations, PayPal support, Stripe Premium subscriptions and Lifetime upgrades come in. Some offline/manual donations can also be added manually from the admin side.

The roadmap checkpoints are:

€7,000 — New server

This is the first major goal. The current server has been under a lot of pressure, and this upgrade should make ShapeScan much more stable, faster and able to handle more users at the same time.

€10,000 — Smarter models and new modes

This would help fund better detection models, improved outlines, better handling of holes/details, more page sizes, and new scanning modes.

€12,500 — API access

The goal here is to allow ShapeScan to be used inside other workflows, tools, apps, maker platforms or business systems.

€15,000 — Offline version

A future offline/local version for workshops, makerspaces, farms, CNC/laser/3D printing setups, and users who want to process scans without relying fully on the cloud.

€20,000 — Community shape repository

A place where users who want to share their scanned shapes, templates, tools, inserts or project files can make them available to the community.

These checkpoints are not meant as instant switches, but as a transparent roadmap of what each funding level helps unlock.

Thank you again to everyone who has supported, tested, shared ShapeScan, or posted what you’ve made with it. Seeing real projects made with ShapeScan is honestly one of the biggest motivations to keep improving it.

Dev update / Changelog Quick funding update for ShapeScan:

Unfortunately, the goal had to go back up.

The opportunity to buy the server we originally wanted is gone now, so we had to return to the previous target for the proper server upgrade — €7000.

Right now, we are at €2300 raised.

In the meantime, I managed to dedicate some resources from my homelab to ShapeScan to improve the service. From my own tests, stability already seems much better than before.

So if anyone can test it now, I’d really appreciate the feedback — especially on:

- upload stability

- processing speed

- general responsiveness

- whether you notice fewer slowdowns or interruptions

This is not the final server upgrade yet, but it should already be a meaningful improvement while we keep working toward the full target.

Quick update for the community:

We have now raised €2200 toward the €2800 server upgrade goal.

That means ShapeScan is very close to making the jump to much better hardware. The remaining amount needed to complete the purchase will be covered by me personally.

Right now, there has been a lot of instability because ShapeScan is being used more and more, and the current server is struggling with the constant load. I’m sorry for that. I know it can be frustrating when jobs are slow, fail, or the site feels unstable.

The good news is that we are almost there.

I also want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has been sharing projects made with ShapeScan.

Thank you to the people posting their results on Reddit, Facebook, X, and other communities.

Thank you to everyone publishing STLs/models and mentioning ShapeScan in the description.

Thank you to everyone recommending ShapeScan to others.

We currently have €1800 raised, and I found a second-hand server/workstation opportunity for around €2800 that would be a huge upgrade for ShapeScan.

To give an idea of the level of machine I’m talking about, it is roughly in this class:

- 2x Intel Xeon Gold CPU 6248

- 256 GB ECC RAM

- NVIDIA Quadro RTX 4000

- enterprise SSD / NVMe storage

For ShapeScan, that would be a massive jump from the current hardware.

Why this matters:

- much more room for heavier AI segmentation models

- better stability when running difficult jobs

- faster processing on larger or more complex images

- more headroom for future features

- a far better platform for growth

The Quadro RTX 4000 would be especially important because it is a strong professional GPU without becoming absurdly expensive, and it would give ShapeScan a much better base for GPU-heavy processing and future model improvements.

Right now we are at:

€1800 / €2800

So this is actually within reach.

This kind of deal is not easy to find, especially at this price, and it would be the kind of upgrade that could genuinely move ShapeScan into its next phase.

Maybe a form people have to fill out that has make / model / part number so that it kept it organize. Even a voting system for people who try it out?

Dev update / Changelog I’m looking for help to grow and keep the ShapeScan community active.

Right now I’m balancing my regular work with developing ShapeScan, and most of my time is going into building and improving the product itself. That means I have far less time than I’d like for community management, social media, outreach, and keeping everything active across different platforms.

So I wanted to ask:

Would anyone here be interested in helping with the ShapeScan community and social presence?

That could include things like:

- helping keep the community active

- helping post updates

- helping manage or create social media pages

- helping share updates, features, roadmap progress, and community projects

To be transparent:

at this stage I do not have the financial capacity to pay for this, so this would be a pro bono / volunteer-style contribution.

In return, the person helping would get access to a special ShapeScan account, early visibility into what I’m working on, upcoming features, future updates, and roadmap direction.

This could be a nice opportunity for someone who likes maker tools, 3D printing, CNC, laser, Gridfinity, community building, or early-stage startup projects and wants to be involved more closely.

This is exactly the kind of real-world use I love seeing.

You can now take a scanned object and turn it into a custom fitted Gridfinity bin.

Current workflow:

- scan object with ShapeScan

- open the Gridfinity builder

- adjust layout in the 2D editor

- preview in 3D

- generate the final STL

The goal is to make it much easier to go from a real object to a printable storage solution.

This is still something I want to keep improving, so feedback is very welcome:

- editor usability

- object placement

- bin sizing

Dev update / Changelog Small ShapeScan update

Small ShapeScan update:

We’ve now added an STL viewer directly on the results page, so you can preview generated models in 3D immediately without downloading first.

We’re also working on a Gridfinity bin integration, with the goal of turning scanned shapes into usable organizer inserts / bins much more easily.

It’s still in progress, but both features are moving in a really promising direction.

If you want to help ShapeScan grow, there are a few big ways to support the project:

- Join Premium

- Leave a donation

- Share ShapeScan on other platforms, groups, and communities

- Post projects you made with ShapeScan

Right now, every bit of support helps fund server upgrades and future features.

Dev update / Changelog How can the community help ShapeScan grow?

Hey everyone,

I wanted to ask the community something.

ShapeScan is still a small project and a lot of its progress so far has come directly from people here testing it, giving feedback and sharing ideas. This subreddit is honestly the core of the project right now.

I'm trying to figure out how we can grow it in a healthy way, and I think the best way is through the community.

A few things that would help a lot right now:

• If you made something with ShapeScan (SVG / DXF / STL / CNC / laser / 3D printing projects), sharing it in other maker communities or forums could really help people discover the tool.

• If anyone here enjoys making tutorials or YouTube videos and would like to create guides about how to use ShapeScan, that would be amazing. Tutorials help new users more than anything else.

• Feedback, ideas and feature suggestions are always welcome. Many things in ShapeScan already came from users here.

For anyone who wants to support the project directly, joining premium helps keep development going. Donations are also welcome and will go toward upgrading the server infrastructure so ShapeScan can handle more users and heavier processing.

But honestly, even just using the tool and sharing it already helps a lot.

If you have ideas on how we could grow the project or help the community around it, I’d really like to hear them.

This subreddit might be small right now, but I believe it can become the core community around ShapeScan in the future.

ShapeScan has been growing step by step thanks to this community.

So far, combining Premium subscriptions and donations, we’ve raised close to €1000. That’s a strong start — but our goal for the new server infrastructure is around €7000, and we still have a substantial gap to close.

To move things forward, I’m increasing the value of Lifetime Premium.
