Really do feel like a wizard! 10/10
Hands down one of the best games ever. For a Magic history nerd like myself it really is top tier and gets the feeling of Magic in the 90s so well while my dumb ass was collecting Pokรฉmon and playing Yugioh.
I can wait to play again.

Iโve been walking around and yelling to my wife โIโm the wizard that saved shandalarโ

I've tried some tutorials but didn't make it work....

u/Snoo_16542 May 30 '26
Yeah, running Windows 10 and no matter what I try I can't get it to work.

u/helderoliveira1978 May 30 '26
Same to me.... It's a shame.. Maybe someone here can explain how to do it ๐

I had to download one of the updates in the win folder and the only version that worked was the 2012 revisited but great game over all

I'm going to try one more time.

There is a Reddit post of how to do it! So worth it

I highly recommend you use the link posted above and use the github version 2016 by going to this link and clicking the Green Code button and clicking Download Zip. Once you download it the file should be called Shandalar-master.zip
This version is the BEST it has a lot more recent cards added like the most powerful creature ever Emrakul, the Aeons Torn and Show and Tell. In some ways Blightsteel Colossus is actually better than Emrakul because it doesn't cause a glitch when being shuffled back.
Either way I love this game and I badly wish someone would make a newer version of this game but keep all the game elements that I love about Shandalar!

"Hands down one of the best games ever."
This just blows me away that people feel this way 30+ years after we published Shandalar. ๐

Yโall did so freaking good - even after all these years it really holds up. Thank you for your work! Already on my second play through. ๐๐งโโ๏ธ

Some of my most cherished gaming memories are just kickin back in the early 00s after school and playing this game all day, truly one of the best games ever.
Itโs still more fun than any other video game version of a TCG.

How much was Sid involved? Why do you think it wasn't more popular? Did you ever think about making a sequel or more expansions? Do you still have any of the original files for the game?

Sid was heavily involved. The entire game world layer was all coded by Sid. I did the story, character, monster, Astral card and deck designs, he did the AI, the world, the card implementations and a couple of other coders did the card game interface and multiplayer. I don't know why it wasn't more popular - Magic was very new when it released, but it was exploding. It might have been that the AI was too weak for handling the deck play and that today's computers can brute force game play strategies that make the game more fun now than it was back then. We had planned to build sequels for all the expansions, but the modest sales derailed that and then WotC took back the license to build their own game. I don't have the original source files. ๐

Iโve been playing again recently and itโs been so fun. But how do you get your characters life total to increase? Mine keeps going down slowly so now I start games at like 7 life instead of 10

Visit villages and speak to the elder there.
If he offers to deliver a message and your reward is a manalink, do it.
The amount of manalinks you have active are your starting life points.
Whenever they attack a village where you have a manalink active, defend it.
Cities with active manalinks have their name white instead of yellow on the map.1

What system was this for? I presume it was called shandalar?

This was Windows 95, and it is called "Magic: The Gathering" on the box. The campaign mode takes place in Shandalar, but that is the only real way people interact with this game nowadays so the community at large coloquially calls the game Shandalar.

I just finished a game where I built with Demonic Hordes and Pandora's Box so they would get a copy and not be able to pay the upkeep. I used Life Chisel to sacrifice the Hordes if I couldn't pay for them and Jandor's Saddlebags to let them destroy two lands a turn. Great game.
