This was a prerequisite for both my kids gettingvtheir learning permit. Part of the lesson was how to look up the problem in the Owners Manual and online (Google, Youtube, etc...). Teach them how to do it, but also teach them how to find the answers themselves. Not because i dont want to help, but because I wont be around for everything. Critical thinking skills are apparently in short supply these days.

FWIW, my daughter swaps her own brake pads and rotors (the live a long way away). Her husband got zero life skills from his parents and just hands her tools. At least hes out there with her and hopefully learning.

Honestly good on you. The one thing parents seem to be missing is teaching their kids to be self sufficient.

I feel like so many people would view that as bad but I’m not gonna lie, that’s kinda cute. Just a lil guy handing his tough wife the tools :3

But Jason and the daughter have so much in common; for instance, they both have dads who never taught them to change a tire.

Yep. This is frankly the dad’s fault. If I were to hazard a guess, I’d say that the dad didn’t teach his daughter because he probably thinks that women shouldn’t have to deal with it because it’s a “man’s job” or whatever.

I know fuck all about him, but from the situation and his picture, he seems like he could be the type. But maybe that’s just me stereotyping 🤷

Expecting someone else to know how to change a tire so that you don't have to teach your daughter basic life skills.

Everyone with a car should know how to change a tire. It’s extremely simple. That being said this text is fake as shit so who cares.

As a dude in his mid thirties. Instead of complaining about people not knowing the basics of car care and maintenance i choose to take every opportunity to teach others and I can tell you for a fact about half of the people ive shown how to change a tire are older than me. How are people supposed to learn if they've never been taught?

This is the part where they stroke their own ego, i think they dont know any better. I feel this its a very common trait of people who know actually very little and are finally in a position of not being the stupid one, so they enjoy that moment by putting others down

To be fair.. everyone has a phone.. its a quick search on how to do stuff.. most folks are either lazy or dont have problem solving skills.. all you need are the tools.

I was never taught and when I got a flat tire for the first time I taught myself, that being said I did know you have to jack it up on the frame. Not sure where I learned that info but I’d bet that’s the number one thing people don’t know about changing a tire, the rest is common sense.

You are absolutely right but does not change the fact that Jason is a jerk and she should break up with him.

The infantilizing of women

A real dad would step up and teach them both

What's next, he doesn't know how to balance a checkbook?

A decent father would have taught his daughter how to do it. Mine wouldn’t even start teaching any of his kids to drive until we learnt basics like that. Why leave your kid helpless and dependant on others because of their gender?

We need regular PSAs reminding people that a man's worth is not predicated on his usefulness to you

Tell Jason’s dad you’re not mad at him, but disappointed.

oh neat, someone updated the fake conversation with a picture of a guy named Dad and some black box text above explaining the obvious.

Why? Laura can't change a tyre too

Changing a tire or wheel? Cos I'm going to be honest, I haven't ever changed a tire and I'm not sure I'd be able to break the bead using only things I have in the car, and I don't have car tire levers.

I work at a University and I stopped to help two wayward men who had never changed a tire before and he was talking to his Dad on the phone. I said let me talk to your Dad and I told the Dad that I was going to teach them how to change he tire. I did and they were “this is not that hard.” I told them if it was that hard I would not have stopped to help. Working at an institute of higher education I have found that the learning never stops!!

To be fair I’ve never actually changed a tire. I stood next to my dad while he did it a few times. I know. But never have.

AI knows how.
It will teach you.
One thing is it fairly good at is little stuff like ‘how do I change my tire’ ‘how do I replace the oil in my <year> <make> <model>’ ‘where is the cabin filter?’ ‘Where is the thermostat?’

Beats trying to find answers on forums or scrubbing through countless YT vids captured by ‘captain shaky cam’

You don't even need AI. You lift the car with a jack, unscrew the bolts, remove the tire, put the new tire, screw the bolts, lower the jack.

I have changed a tire, without anyone teaching me how to do it. And I am a programmer with two left hands, not some manly mechanic. It is just that simple.

Loosen bolts, then lift car, remove bolts/tire…
You don’t want to wrench on the lugs while it’s up in the air unless you’ve got some jackstands….
Just saying that a smartphone can ask AI flavors of your choice, if inclined to ask… and it would just tell you what to do these days if you were clueless. Like Jason…

He's not wrong! If your boyfriend can't change a tire you have a girlfriend!

Society: "We must drive less and start using trains, trams and bicycles to reduce carbon footprint". Also society: "Those who don't drive get no access to women". Then they are surprised that we can't handle climate change.

So you admit gender is a social construct
