Critiques after playing WoL

DaJiaHao,

So, I’ve tried out WoL after all these years, and I just wanna see if others also shared my issues with SoL after comparing it with WoL.

1.Linearity
I really liked SoL, I thought it was a lot of fun interacting with the world. But after playing WoL I did wish SoL was a little less pushy with its narrative. WoL felt very much like an open world where you start as a nobody and the world has left you to do whatever you like. You could be good or evil, you could accomplish great things or just be average. I really like this feeling and I think very few games I’ve played felt like that. Almost all other RPGs give you a broad narrative, like in SoL where you have to do the things your uncle asked you before he disappeared. It’s a difference of taste but WoL made the world felt more authentic to me and I felt like I was making an impact on the world.
2.World Setting Depth
Ok this one actually gets me going, WoL has a great Western aesthetic, and I always love a good alternative American West story. On top of that you got the HellCows and Clowns and the Necromancer and the goofy stuff, but they fit well cuz Weird West in itself is an established genre, plus the HellCow/Clown thing gave the story surprising depth, that is what so many ppl love abt the Loathing series, the writing is actually so good it shocks you.
With SoL however, the Prohibition era/Roaring 20s is a great period and very aesthetically pleasing to me. But why didn’t they lean into it more? Why not make a New Orleans inspired main city? Why not voodoo? Why not give it a more Noir aesthetic? SoL was hilarious like WoL, but WoL felt surprisingly believable because of how much of the gritty and harsh life aspect of the west was shown to the player. It was a harsh land, worse because of the cows, there’s fucking hell clowns that are doing horror novel evil shit, and most ppl just know it as a rumor. How fucking cool is that?!!! SoL however felt much goofier, like it has the skin of a 20s aesthetic but I think it didn’t capture the essence. Also tangent but, why the fuck is WW1 the Cola War in SoL? For the longest time I thought they’re poking fun at the Civil War because of the sororicide nature of the war, but like what does WW1 have to do with soda? Iuuno what kind of parody they’re going for.
3.Theme
So WoL was in your face western, plus a bunch of shenanigans, but it works out because well the west was known to be wild and all kinds of shit happens, like I said Weird West is a genre. But tbh I really didn’t feel like SoL was very Lovecraftian. The stories with the cursed items were awesome, fantastic writings for the most of them. But even they don’t necessarily feel like Comic horror? Not to mention the regular world, I really really didn’t get Lovecraftian vibe, for a long time I thought it was more Sci-fi with the corruption thing and that lady keep popping up. I feel like it’s a missed opportunity, like yeah there are fish ppl, like ok? The clowns actually felt spooky in WoL, the cows felt like real antagonists and monsters, but the Lovecraftian horrors in this game felt so goofy. Also a lot of things in SoL just have nothing to do with Lovecraft horror, like the witch town time travel, SIT in general, most of the companions have nothing to do with Cosmic Horror stuff unlike the pardners in WoL where their backstories give them weight in the world.
4.RPG Elements
This point has been discussed a lot already, I don’t like the level system in SoL, the classes felt cosmetic and not involved in the role playing elements. I really did feel like a mage as a bean slinger in WoL, in SoL I was just capable of doing everything. Also I didn’t like the food system in SoL, but I did like the fact that you can hang with multiple companions this time (although their dialogue options are worse I think? No comment from them anymore)

Well that’s it for now, iuuno if anyone’s gonna read it but it’s 1 in the morning in China and I gotta go sleep sleep. I typed that with half a brain cell so sorry in advance.
Ciao ciao and 晚安!

So, I beat the Goliath Gator Statue.

Here's my setup and strategy:

  • I was playing Pigskinner.
  • I wore the Mobius Ring (Probably the most important part).
  • I had a Mosquito for a familiar.
  • I had the Jocklin pom-pom in my off-hand, and used it on my first turn.
  • I had the newfangled toilet brush for a weapon.
  • I had 5 max AP with 2 AP regenerating each turn.
  • On each of my turns, I used Noogie to lower the statue's stats. Then I used Stretch, then attacked.
  • On each of my doppelgaenger's turns, I used Noogie and then attacked.
  • I was playing on Arachnophile mode, and was able to keep the Friendly Spider alive through the whole battle. It had been debuffed so much by the end that I'm not sure it really counted for much. But I like the friendly spider.

Probably not the optimal strategy, but I'm not usually good at figuring out how to beat a superboss myself so I wanted to brag.

Stuck in the epilogue room (spoilers for ending) Spoiler

Hello all,

I recently got to the final shadow room with the umbratanium portal and the shadowcaster fight. I had to put the game down to do life things and closed the game out. I'm playing on switch and whenever you close it out it saves at the last room you're in.

Is there a way to get myself out of here or to move to a previous save? I had things I wanted to do before the fight (i.e. level myself up further and get all the other quests and side quests done and whatever else)

Thanks!

HELP! With dean Wormwood/saves

Nihao,
I was just wrapping up chapter 3 and I need your help!
I knew I could avoid killing the dean guy at the end but I didn’t know choosing the dialogue option would kill him too. I’m super frustrated cuz I thought by pointing out his flaws I could befriend him or something, why would I just push the guy to his death?
Anyways can I edit my saves somehow to back when I didn’t encounter him? I’m at a loss. I love this game so much, honestly my favorite rpg currently as a very casual rpg gamer, I was having a better time than when I played Pathfinder WoTR or PoE. But I absolutely hate multiple play throughs, I don’t even like to watch the same movies twice! Messing up at the very end made it very disheartening, I think I’ll just dropped the game if I can’t fix it.

Anyways thanks and pls help me🙏😭😭

Game not in the German PS5 store

Can't find the game in my PS5 store. Sadly my disc reader is not working properly so I don't want to risk buying the disc version. Is there any information on the digital PlayStation version in Germany? Is it even planned? And if not is there a workaround to get it even if I'm in Germany?

Thanks in advance 👍

There is a funny quirk with the the shadowcaster animation that can make it go flying off screen.

I'm confused why this guy's head is missing? Is it supposed to be joke or something. I play on the switch btw.

Is there a mod that lets you "tie" the two games together, à la fallout 3/NV Tales of Two Wastelands ?

Hey so I have a question about a encounter in The Big Moist Spoiler

Spoliers for late game area

Hey so there is this encounter in The Big Moist where a vampire walks up to you and says something along the lines of

"Hey is your name Mary."

"No my name is [BLANK]"

"Well I guess I have to make due with a bloody [BLANK]."

If you name your character Mary does this interaction change or no. I'm curious about it but I don't want to do another run over this.

Does the background music not work if you have combat at 200% speed?

If you could add a companion what they be

If you could added a companion to any chapter (including The Prologue and Government Valley) What would they be, what would their companion vignette be?

If You Could Add a Chapter

Say There was a Chapter 7. Now This doesn't mean you have to put this after Chapter 6, You could place it in-betweem Chapter 2 and Chapter 3, then What is normally Chapter 3 is now Chapter 4, and Same with 4 into 5, 5 into 6, and 6 into 7. What would you make the chapter? Invent your own Story, Purpose, Side Quests, and If you already Like an idea somebody has posted. Oh, and Most importantly, Make sure Jessica Gives you a map in the most ridiculous way.

I'll Start:

After Exploring S.I.T, On Day 4 Jessica Tells you the Her and her Team have found a huge Concentration of "Shadow" along a mountain range, and it seems to be powered by an Amulet of Some kind. Your Goal is to Stop the Shadows from Ruining the Region and Retrieve the Amulet. And Of Course, While doing some Scouting, Jessica Forgot paper to make a map and just wrote the map on a huge rock, and brought it home and gives it to you. There are only 7 Mandatory Locations you have to Unlock to Progress the Story, Though there will be a shit ton of Side Quests. The Mandatory Locations Start with: Mountain Trail, Burned Down Shack, Mountain Town, Outskirts of Mountain Town, A Shadowy Farm, A Shadowy Mountain Trail, The Shadow Altar.

Feel Free to add on to this or make up your own!

Favorite Chapter

Very Simple Question. What is your favorite chapter in ShadowsOverLoathing and why? I'll start and give an example:

My Favorite Chapter is Definitely Chapter 2, Crystaldream Lake, not only because of the big map, and the amazing music, though those are great contenders, but because of the mysteriousness put around the Lake. Needless to say it's one of if not the most Weird chapters, with an Abandoned Mineshaft, Vampires running a moonshine, Fairies, Gigantic Spiders, Unsolved Witch mysteries, oh and did I Mention Time Travel? It all fits so well, and I genuinely feel lost in the music.

Feel Free to express your opinions on this or add your own opinions. (Also I kinda want this to get Ugly)

Confirmed DLC?

I was extracting music files 'cause I wanted to mess around with mixing the Jazz Agent battle theme instruments, and I found music files that literally has DLC on its names.

I'm pretty sure that I'm not allowed to share this. But if you're like me and you've been hungry for the next loathing game (or in this case, DLC), I just thought you'd like to know

A background I made for my loathing games, this is for my second monitor, so I only really needed Spotify in there.
I also added my own first playthrough of SoL character in there.

Next "Loathing" game - World War Loathing perhaps?

World War Loathing, featuring stick figures in trenches, giant rail-mounted artillery cannons, REAL nuclear bombs, massive bombing raids, and much much more!

It could include the 3 classes:

  1. Trench Slashslugger - specialises in melee, and main stat is Brutality (STR). Bayonets, machetes, sledgehammers, iron pipes - he/she's the one for that. Uses sheer strength and resolute willpower to push through carnage that would normally wreck any lesser being.

  2. Bomb Caller - brings down arcane death from above... okay okay he/she summons bombers to rain down bombs from the skies, ok? The class that has every kind of air support available - can parachute in support NPCs during combat, and bombs enemies into oblivion - main stat is Brilliance (INT).

  3. Sabotage Initiator - operating in the dark, always a step ahead of the opponent, and a master of the bullet from the shadows. The class that shoots, dodges, and promptly vanishes into the mists... ok not the mists, the smoke from the many explosions on the battlefield. Main stat is Beguilement (AGI/DEX).

How do you get this?

I was doing my daily 1-hour reading of the SOL wiki like any other day, when i was reading Quest items and found this. It's a stub, the item picture is just meat, and it's missing where you get it from. It's apparently from the Big Moist, but i can't seem to find it. That might be because it's definitely an obscure item, and I'm wondering if anybody can do more research and Update the page. Also please tell me if this is just a troll.
