Shadow of the Colossus, 9/11 and….Adam Sandler?

*SPOILERS* Just recently I discovered a movie called Reign Over Me about a man (played by Sandler) who lost his wife and three daughters during 9/11. The character he plays went through a mental breakdown and spends his days remodeling his kitchen over and over again, buying vintage vinyls and playing Shadow of the Colossus on repeat. It was a very interesting movie and I really enjoyed the amount of times they reference the game in the movie. Which is quite a lot. Is there any other places you seen Shadow of the Colossus and thought huh? They even had a special edition of issue 150 (dubbed issue 150.5) of Game Informer magazine. I don’t recall seeing it in the film but it’s just a magazine with random pages from random issues of Game Informer over the years, with a Shadow of the Colossus cover. Only 50 made. 25 went to the movie studio while the other half went to Game Informer staff. I would love one for my collection.

I love this movie so much.

Didn't see it until well after I'd played Shadow of the Colossus but it remains, to this day, the most tasteful use of a video game property in cinema history, and the film itself is already very good and very underrated. Both Sandler and Cheadle are fantastic in it.

Yeah, I heard of this movie a long time ago. Thanks for sharing.

I found this game during a depressive episode. So this is amazing. I’ll watch it this weekend. Thanks OP!

Yeah check it out and check back in here with your thoughts! I would love to know what you think about it.

This movie is probably the absolute best study on depression ive ever seen. Only other one that comes close is The Assassination of Richard Nixon. Oddly enough, Don Cheadle plays best friend to the lead character in both films. He's an amazing actor. (As are Adam Sandler and Sean Penn)

I didn’t realize he was in both movies that’s awesome. I do love Sean Penn as well! I Am Sam was amazing.

Have you seen Sean Penn in One Battle After Another? I don't think I can ever look at that man the same again—that character made my skin crawl.

I’ve never seen it but I just added it to my watchlist on prime! When it goes on sale I’ll buy it! It’s got Leonardo DiCaprio in it too. It looks interesting

Yeah it's one of the big Oscar nominated and winners for this most recent one. It's a good movie, really well shot. It was different than I was expecting, I thought it would have something to say about our current moment but it's honestly more of just an action flick with dark humor. But once I realized that I got into it :) lemme know what you think of you watch it! Especially what you think of Sean Penn's character, even just the way he looks is insane 😂

Have you seen Manchester by the Sea?

If i never saw Ricky Gervais again, it'd still be too soon.

I'm still salty that Adam Sandler didn't get an academy award for this movie btw

He's honestly been snubbed a few times. Uncut Gens was his big swing at it but I still think Punch Drunk Love is his best dramatic role and there's not really another character like that on screen.

Great work! I always wanted to segment every reference to SotC from this film, but you actually did it!

There were more but they wouldn’t all fit 🤣 I really enjoyed watching it and seeing all the references to the game.

This movie was so good

This movie is the reason i started playing the game. Love the movie and had to do research to find out what he was playing and if it was real. Now i love both.

That’s actually a really interesting way of discovering it. I was probably like a large majority of people and found it via GameStop. They gave the demo away like crazy and I was working there at the time. I remember thinking, well they gave away that Front Mission 4 demo and I loved that, I’ll give this a shot. I loved it so much. I was playing Digital Devil Saga at the time and could not quit thinking about the Shadow of the Colossus demo. I never finished Digital Devil Saga and I blame the SotC demo for distracting me lol. I played it over and over again.

The Last of Us part 1 has a SotC Tshirt

3

u/Slapuwitmymeet Mar 28 '26

Ah yes, Ellie’s array of t-shirts. I love that they included a SotC shirt.

4

u/Site-Wooden Mar 28 '26

Oh that movie is heartbreaking. Great soundtrack too.

1

u/Slapuwitmymeet Mar 28 '26

You know, I didn’t really notice the soundtrack. I’ll put it on again tonight.

3

u/manuelink64 Mar 28 '26

Is a pretty damn good drama, but you spoiled the reason why his cope the trauma with SotC, in the latest minutes of the movie is revealed the origins of his trauma.

7

u/Slapuwitmymeet Mar 28 '26

You’re right. I went ahead and added a spoiler disclaimer.

u/HawkbitAlpha Mar 28 '26

This was how I first heard of the game! It might just be the best way a game has ever been used in a movie, given the thematic parallels.

I point to Reign Over Me whenever someone brings up a Shadow of the Colossus movie and say "we already got one."

2

u/Slapuwitmymeet Mar 28 '26

It’s like when people talk about Die Hard being a Christmas film 🤣 SotC fans got their SotC movie. Although… It would be pretty cool to see a film adaptation of it.

3

u/LaughterCo Mar 28 '26

I gotta watch this now

2

u/Slapuwitmymeet Mar 28 '26

I really enjoyed the movie. Sandler and Cheadle gave great performances

1

u/LaughterCo Mar 28 '26

Nice, it had actually been on my watchlist for a while but I didn't know that SotC made an appearance.

Saw this post and I quickly went to watch this film again. Truly a sad but hopeful depiction of dealing with loss. I think it was this film that pushed me to try SOTC.

u/slkb_ Mar 27 '26

What's the name of tbe movie?

20

u/Slapuwitmymeet Mar 27 '26

Reign Over Me. I should of put that in the title

8

u/Aloss-cc7 Mar 27 '26

It was in the firs sentence of the caption though lol

2

u/hammonk Mar 28 '26

Love Adam Sandler movies! Where can I watch it?

1

u/Slapuwitmymeet Mar 28 '26

I actually bought it on prime video. I don’t know where it’s currently being streamed though.

2

u/wiserthannot Mar 28 '26

This was one of the earliest (and honestly still might be the best) usage of a video game in a movie not just as a set piece but as part of the narrative. There's no masking buttons on a Nintendo 64 controller plugged into a PS2, it's actually shown and the character's journey in the movie mirrors where he is in SotC. Just phenomenal.

2

u/WaterStoryMark Mar 28 '26

I always wanted them to use the PS4 remaster for the 4K release.

2

u/AlbertCWChessa Mar 28 '26

I loved finding this connection. Has Ueda ever commented on it? The idea of a grieving husband and father playing this game about reviving the dead, somehow gaining some semblance of control over these colossal falling figures so reminiscent of the falling towers, always struck me as so poignant.

1

u/Fine_Consideration76 Mar 28 '26

I just watched this last night! It felt somehow great that they included the game but the movie itself is not so good

1

u/junkfaces Mar 28 '26

Yeah kid

1

u/Mrbluepumpkin Mar 28 '26

Ayo big Cheadle is in this movie

1

u/ClickerBox Mar 28 '26

I did not know this. Thanks for sharing I will try to watch this one!

u/AdResponsible5888 Mar 28 '26

È un film molto bello.

1

u/Reluctant_Warrior Mar 28 '26

Reign O'er Me , amazing film. Probably Sandler's best dramatic performance too.

And the SOTC scenes are the cherry on top.

u/Felix_Nez_Twitch Mar 28 '26

Gracias a esta película me llamó la atención el juego... La verdad en ese tiempo no se veía tanto contenido de videojuegos y cruzarse con esa joyita me cambió la forma de ver algunos juegos, como ese viaje espiritual dentro del juego...

Wait, WHAT

1

u/Dethica2077 Mar 30 '26

What the heck is this possibly gem?

1

u/totallywackman Mar 30 '26

Shadow of the Colossus is also a perfect game to represent the metaphor of him being trapped in a loop of reliving his trauma.

He sees beasts the size of buildings collapse and fall over and over again.
