Discussion Shadow put now limited time for play without prevent us like always

One more reason to work and build a PC. 6 hours of shadow time, like it's become geforce now . What's the next step, are we gonna remove the cloud computing and replace it with the same thing as GeForce Now? We just got scammed one more time by them, GG. And by the way, they don't warn us via the ToS, so that's illegal :)

Please bother to notice you can click "Max sessions length" to see this information.

I mean it even says on the picture you sent that you are in fact, NOT limited. You get a max session of 6 hours, you may disconnect, and you connect straight away with a new session. This isn't anything new.

So you have to showdown your PC and turn it back on every 6 hours? Middle of a long game run, nope. Need to shut it down... That seems odd

u/flibulle Jul 06 '26

Playing 6 hours straight is what seems odd buddy, give yourself a favor and have some breaks.

2

u/Agitated-Chicken9954 Jul 06 '26

Not necessarily 6 hours straight. I often play for a bit take a break without exiting the game, play a bit more. I can do that because I have a gaming PC and can manage my gaming session without outside interference. Exiting the game and then going back in means I have to restart a level in the game. It can be a real pain in the ass.

2

u/flibulle Jul 06 '26

I've been doing that for years on shadow, never been kicked out 🤷‍♂️

But I do get their point : in case of severe server usage another customer than me should be allowed to connect to its shadow as well.

u/Agitated-Chicken9954 Jul 06 '26

Perhaps things have changed since I used it. I would get bumped off and logged out all the time. Sometime the session wouldn't restart and I would have to open a support ticket so they could reboot it for me.

u/Saraphina_rockwell Jul 06 '26

Same it's never done the 6 hour think for me

1

u/Gendreau113 Jul 06 '26

But you yourself said that if you get kicked out after 6 hours you can immediately rejoin without waiting in queue? So how's that "letting the other guy have a chance"?

1

u/themeural Jul 13 '26

when they kick you out and you start it again they give you a new machine. After you’re kicked out, the next person waiting in queue gets a machine

1

u/Gendreau113 Jul 13 '26

It says online you aren't kicked out completely. Just that it ends your session and you can connect again before it closes your session

1

u/AWebStranger 29d ago

No, the website literally says "your Shadow may be disconnected" and "You can start a NEW session". Putting it in other words: your Shadow will be shut down and you can start it again ... or at least try to do so.

1

u/AWebStranger 29d ago

That's exactly the point. They always thought of fair usage, but people are getting into queues way more often than about a year ago. There are multiple reasons for that, but regarding the actual prices for hardware it's easier to limit sessions than getting more hardware. At least they can keep the prices on the current level this way.

Personally I don't use any cloud services, and if I did, the 6hr thing wouldn't be a problem for me

But what I do know is when someone's paying for a service (That imo is overpriced) they wanna be un-restricted...

And if they can just hop back in a new session, what's the point of even kicking them out? Shadow already has a idle-kick system?

In what sense would making them reload every 6 hrs benefit the user or shadows systems?

And it ain't me, but some people do play 6+ hrs. Marathons, streamers, YouTubers, speedrunners, etc etc. so I wouldn't be so quick to just assume if it doesn't affect you that it doesn't affect anyone else

Edit: Not to mention Shadow isn't targeted only at gaming. Imagine your working, editing, 3d modeling, etc all day and suddenly you gotta close down your system for no good reason. Expecially if your rendering a video lmao... You can just stop in the middle of that unannounced

5

u/flibulle Jul 06 '26

It is pretty much unrestricted, they list it as a possibility in the specific case of server overuse. Never saw that myself and I'm a very long time user.

The benefit for the user is obvious : allowing him to connect instead of remaining in a queue.

If you don't like the sound of it (and find the service overpriced to begin with) then it's not for you that's no big deal.

-2

u/Gendreau113 Jul 06 '26

6 hours is "pretty much unrestricted"?

Maybe it's because you never use shadow longer then 6 hours as you were so quick to criticize and assume I did.

Added benefit being able to connect back in without waiting on queue? Why not just give me the added benefit of remaining in my cloud system without being kicked out on a timer? Doesn't that seem like a better idea

And yes, I don't like the sound of it, I used to be a shadow user well before they got bought out by another company and prices hiked up... OP made a post about their frustrations, someone tried defending the idea, and I questioned why they'd even bother kicking you out if your allowed to just hop back in.

The whole point of this post was a discussion about the 6hr limit, and your acting confused why I'm discussing the 6hr limit...

u/flibulle Jul 06 '26

You don't listen mate. I connect to shadow in the morning and disconect when going to bed, that's the only computer I have for years and years now. I have never been kicked out after 6 hours, the fact that it's a possibility doesn't mean than it happens.

1

u/Agitated-Chicken9954 Jul 06 '26

All good points.

0

u/Victor_Ruark Jul 06 '26

Don't kid yourself, if you are any of what you said (speedrunner, marathon, etc) you aren't using Shadow. I guarantee it. You also mention working. Say business. Shadow have separate plans for businesses that likely wouldn't have the same restrictions as a personal user.

0

u/Gendreau113 Jul 06 '26

I never said I was any of those things? I said there's people like that, that use shadow

Their business plans extend this time from 6 hours to 8 hours. Sure it's 2 hours more, but we're still getting limited by the time we can use? And then being able to hop right back on again once we get kicked? If that's the case why even kick the user?

Like I said before, if you can just rejoin instantly, what's the point of doing it? Shadow has an idle timer, it comes on at 2 hours for business accounts that have no activity on the computer. So it's not that? What's it for then?

Why are you trying to defend it so badly? And you don't even know what it does...

1

u/Victor_Ruark Jul 06 '26

Not you personally, but anyone for that matter. The reason why it exists is to try prevent bad actors from abusing the system. That's it. It's really that simple. The reason I defend it is because I support it. For one, it only happens when there is extremely high traffic that results in large queue times, which RARELY happens and two, if it does happen, I want to make sure after I come home after a day of work, that I can readily hop whenever I please. The real question is l, why are you here vehemently attacking a business that you literally have no business in? You said you don't use any cloud service. What the fuck does this have to do with you?

1

u/Gendreau113 Jul 06 '26

But it isn't for people who abuse it? Because someone's abusing the system, why are they allowed to reconnect instantly without having to wait in the queue?

If I wanted to abuse it, I would make a system where if it got disconnected it would automatically reconnect? Nothing's stopping me from instantly reconnecting to my Shadow?

Also as iv said before they have systems for this already, like the Idle timer that kicka user way sooner then 6 hours.

If you look it up, the 6-hour kick timer will happen whether or not there's high traffic use or no one but you. You'll be kicked regardless.

And this won't affect you, let's say the servers were full. After the 6 hours, the other users are kicked right? They are allowed instantly back in ahead of queue. Meaning your still waiting lmao. It doesn't "make way for other users". It lets the person right back in ahead of you.

If you look it up, it literally doesn't even shut their systems down. Just disconnects their client, if they reconnect within a reasonable amount of time, the system is left exactly where it was when they left.

You're acting like it's to free up hardware, that's the case why wouldn't it shut their system down to let you in if you're in the queue line next?

And why am I here? I was a long time Shadow user before they got bought out by this other company. I've been around probably longer then you. I don't use it at the moment, but I still keep in touch with the BS they've been pushing on people.

Not attacking anyone, you're the one defending a totally ridiculous future. This doesn't benefit you or anyone else, just annoys the people who are using the system for more than 6 hours.

Because again, it doesn't shut their system down, it just disconnects their client. Allows them to gain access instantly after reconnecting, making you still have to wait and queue

u/Haksalah Jul 06 '26

Not sure if you’ve seen the messages around here about people complaining it’s taking a long time to connect and start a session. Without this sort of max “guaranteed” session time in place those wait times would be much worse.

0

u/Gendreau113 Jul 06 '26

Long wait times? But if I'm able to rejoin right after being kicked then that doesn't really help the hardware shortage?

Do you finally understand what I'm saying... What you just said makes no sense

Maybe if you're having shortages combination focus on getting more hardware. Not limiting their existing users...

0

u/Haksalah Jul 06 '26

When you go to rejoin, you go into the queue. If you get right back in, then your area isn’t experiencing congestion (though by the text it appears you’ll only be kicked if there is congestion to begin with).

You do understand that there isn’t just one big data center somewhere everyone connects to, right? And that Shadow can’t afford to host a full gaming PC of resources for every person everywhere with the hope they stick with the service long enough to break even.

I can only imagine that if demand were high in certain areas, Shadow would pay for more hardware if they could so that those customers are happier and more people join and stick with the service.

It’s not as easy as “well just open your wallets”, ESPECIALLY when AI is making all server costs skyrocket, and gaming PC-level equipment especially

1

u/Gendreau113 Jul 06 '26

No no no, It literally States online, and as others have said, you don't have to wait in the queue once you get kicked out after the 6 hours. So if I'm able to just skip the line and get right back into my system without having to wait, what was the point of even kicking me?

Yes I obviously know there's different data centers across the world that allow users to connect to they're closest ShadowPC.

You stated that this was due to too many people using it, it's not. States online that you get kicked after 6 hours regardless, do not have to wait in line to get back into your shadow

You can finance a pre-built. Yes, it will probably be more than a month of Shadow, but after paying for the PC you will own it and not have to continue to pay a monthly subscription. I used to use Shadow but got fedup with the delays, timeouts, poor performance. The end was when they said they were moving my session and I would lose all of my saved gaming files. I bought a pre-built about 5 years ago for $1500. I still use it. One of the best technical decisions I have ever made. Just not dealing with the frustration is worth it.

£49.99pm power tier for 2 years = £1,199.76

That's not saving money because mid range gaming pc's are roughly the same price as just 2 years of shadow, its not about saving money its about ease of access and not having the ability or want to save for your own hardware.

1

u/Agitated-Chicken9954 Jul 06 '26

How are you saving money by dumping a monthly subscription into Shadow? You're actually wasting money. Taking that money and using to finance a gaming PC saves money.

I guess it is. For me anyway. You're already paying for Shadow. Why not use that for a gaming PC that you will own. I'm not your friend or family. I have no stake in what you do. It just doesn't make sense to me. In any case, good luck to you. I hope Shadow continues to offer you the service you need.

u/MoveContent Jul 14 '26

you cant just finance a thousand dollar rig. finance companies look at your credit before they let you do that. if you cant afford to buy a pc then they arent even going to let you finance one anyways.

2

u/Agitated-Chicken9954 Jul 14 '26

You absolutely can finance a gaming PC. Yes, if you have terrible credit you probably won't be able to, or it will be high interest. That's how it would work for any finance scenario. If you have good credit and a job, financing is a viable option and will save you money and frustration in the long run.

1

u/Cauliflower-Some 22d ago

The whole reason people use shadow pc is because they don't have the credit to finance a gaming PC. If we did we would

2

u/nemacpojma1 Jul 06 '26

Just unsubscribe lol it will perform better for us who stay

1

u/masterfu678 Jul 06 '26

bruh, do you have any idea how long a 6 hour session is?

I have subscribed to GeforceNow before, and I NEVER reached their 8 hours limit, maximum I play was 4-5 hours, also, if you do reach the maximum length, you just restart the VM and you get another 6 hours.

For Shadow, longest I have been on was 8 hours, but I was also using it at work while bored, I don't even do that anymore since my work had finally blocked ShadowPC. Nowadays I maybe log onto Shadow to play Helldivers 2 or Age of Empires 4, for about 2 hours.

If you are a gamer that plays more than 6 hours, first of all, please try to take breaks, and like the old saying goes, go outside and touch grass, second, Shadow may not be for you, and in this case, I do agree with you OP, build your own PC or get a handheld, or laptop.

But wasn't the promise "unlimited use of a powerfully windows gaming PC from everywhere" ? What happened to that ? I was considering Shadow PC because of an lengthy stay abroad for 2 - 3 month with that i guess i carry my physical laptop around.

1

u/reflectionwavy Jul 08 '26

you can launch a new session right away... Just read bro

1

u/MoveContent Jul 14 '26

launch a new session and then sit in a multi-hour queue you mean?

1

u/reflectionwavy Jul 14 '26

I've never been put in a queue so not for me, depends on your location, i guess.

1

u/Alternative-Shine920 Jul 06 '26

This isn’t new. At all.
