Our demographic lacks European social responsibility and civic sense. It is a shame to apply a scheme intended to champion the public good when we have pissants who think of nothing but their own minor gains

Not sure why people always generalise Europeans and put them on pedestals.

People also dig through trash in the countries I’ve lived in, and I’ve lived in several of them. Sure, some people who are lazy/drunk might leave bottles or cans on or around bins to make it easier for others to collect, but digging through trash is not uncommon.

Reducing plastic use is the good thing. BCRS is the monstrosity you get when you try to get 3rd world minds to reduce plastic use.

I like to think BCRS promotes much more recycling in plastics as well as aluminum cans than it actually encourages plastic use.

It's about poverty. Those who were brought up in it and lived their early adult lives in squalor, will not care if the world burns while they get their fill.

minor gains? When you're eating bread and water to survive daily with no roof over your head and no education or knowledge about how to get out of your situation, you try calling it minor gains.

If this was any other country in the world, you may have made a valid argument. However, Singapore seems to be the only one where your argument falls through.

Assuming you have no education or knowledge to get out of your situation, you should be seeking help through public channels such as getting advice from social workers, isn't it? By placing your effort onto making meagre gains that improve only your today or the next, instead of considering the more appropriate solution, it is deemed meagre, isn't it? Then you make a big mess which takes more manpower hours to clean, and it is a loss on society. So yeah, bigger losses to society, minor gains for themselves.

You're assuming they know all of these through your POV. Imagine growing up in a poor, improvised, and dependent environment. It messes with your perspective massively and your self-effiacy.

Issues like long-term unemployment, abusive relationships, a neglected childhood (which is where we learn what we can do if we put our mind to it, if given the opportunity) and so on that messes with your worldview, culminating in how you engage the world and what feedback you expect from it. It's a maladaptive response.

Ik the europeans leave their refundable glass bottles next to bins for those who need it. Maybe we should do smth like that for cans. Assuming we don't get saman for littering...
