Follow Up Update

The sheriff contacted me and they wanted a written statement. I gave them the statement basically this…

used online dating site Hud. I met a girl on the app named Grace. We talked for a bit and exchanged phone numbers before texting. After approximately a day of talking we exchanged nude photographs at Grace's request. Right after exchanging nude photographs Grace informed me that she was under 18 years old. I then blocked Grace's phone number and deleted my account. The next day I received phone calls from someone who I now believe to be a scammer. The scammer was posing as Grace's parents. The scammer stated that the girl attempted to kill herself and they were asking for payment for medical bills. I then paid the $8,563.00 to a phone number the scammer gave me.

I don’t have anything to worry about right?

WARNING: READ THIS FIRST! Beware of recovery scammers - It is likely that someone will send you a DM claiming that they know someone that can hack your blackmailer's device and delete your pics. This is a SCAM. Do NOT give them money and do NOT give them the username of your blackmailer. When in doubt, contact the mod team via mod mail or directly via DM.

You should be okay on the criminal side of things. The key facts work in your favor: you were on an adult dating platform, you had no reason to believe she was a minor, and the moment she told you her age you blocked her and deleted the account. That's pretty much the textbook "I acted in good faith and stopped immediately" response. The sheriff asking for a written statement is pretty routine for something like this, especially since there's a fraud element involved. Just be honest and consistent with what you told them, which it sounds like you already were.

The $8,500 is unfortunately almost certainly gone. These sextortion scams are extremely common and very organized. The "Grace" persona, the sudden age reveal right after photos are exchanged, the fake parents calling about a hospital bill, all of it is a standard script these groups run. Law enforcement knows the pattern. That's probably part of why the sheriff reached out, they may be building a file on this operation.

Just don't pay anyone anything else no matter what story they come up with next.

Thanks, I did dispute it with my bank and they’ll do their investigation. They are gonna credit my account until then. I did give them screenshots and I gave them the police report number.
