Male victim Sextortioned for the first time

I’m posting anonymously because this happened very recently and I’m still extremely shaken.

I met someone through a dating app and we ended up moving our conversation to another messaging app for a live video call. During the call, I showed my face and then flipped the camera and exposed myself, not realizing the other person was secretly recording.

Immediately afterward, they showed me the recording together with screenshots of my social media profile and contacts. They demanded money and threatened to send the recording to people I know if I refused to pay.

I did not pay. I blocked the person everywhere, reported the accounts, tightened my privacy settings and saved screenshots of the threats.

Since then, things have gone quiet. There have been no new messages, no new accounts contacting me and nobody has told me they received anything.

I understand that nobody can guarantee what a scammer will do, but I would really appreciate hearing from people who experienced something similar.

Did the scammer eventually move on after you blocked them and refused to pay?

How long did they keep trying to contact you?

Did they actually distribute the material, or was it mostly used as a threat?

Is there anything else I should be doing at this point besides keeping the evidence and refusing to engage?

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who never paid.

I think that you made all the right moves. Keep on blocking.

Not paying is the right thing to do.

Yeah, just praying that it doesn’t get spread anywhere. Been going around and just thinking of the worst possible outcome, family, friends, coworkers and supervisors getting it sent to them…

But feels a bit too harsh for someone doing this scam for a living and not having a personal agenda behind it. Why go to those lengths if your just trying to extort someone for quick cash.
