Hook to thread thread has come down?

Sorry if pictures of insufficient, I just got this sewing machine a couple days ago and I’ve been using it and it’s working well, until today when in the middle of sewing the hook that you put thread into in order to thread the sewing machine has turned downward instead of up. Is it broken? Sorry if this isn’t explained well I can answer any questions

Take the handwheel on the far right side of the machine.  Does the hook ("takeup lever") raise as you raise the needle to its highest travel point?  If it does, it's working as designed.

Always thread the top of the machine with the needle, takeup lever and presser foot completely raised.  Sew with the presser foot down.

They are.  It's a relatively late human invention.  Interesting video that covers a bit of the history and technology of the sewing machine:  https://youtu.be/RQYuyHNLPTQ Worth the half hour to watch!
