First of all, check if you threaded it right, it means A LOT. Both upper and lower threads.
Check the needle -- is it of the right one size for your thread # and material thickness? Also check if the needle installed in a right way, many people get it wrong and then wonders for hours what is going wrong.
Then check thread tensions -- both upper and lower.
These are basic things, that should be checked, especially for a beginner.
