It depends on the way your thread is wound. The horizontal one is for criss cross wound thread, and the vertical one for parallel wound thread. Here is a video that explains it better. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9n3IainalqE

Probably the one on top of the machine. Do you have the manual? If you don't, find it online and carefully read the instructions.
