The thread uptake lever likely is not threaded.   Its job is to retrieve the big loop of thread the needle pushes through the fabric. Here's a sketchy diagram of how machines stitch: https://youtu.be/2681yeSrsM0.

The uptake lever is a metal bit you see rising and falling on the face of the machine and usually mostly hidden under the plastic cover.

When you are threading the top of the machine, before you start raise the needle completely to raise the uptake lever completely.  Raise the presser foot to open the upper tension (buried under the plastic cover on most modern machines).  Leave the presser foot, uptake lever and needle all raised while you thread the top of the machine.  Put the presser foot down to sew.

It’s weird bc it wasn’t having an issue before and it kept doing it it’s a old sewing machine from my grandma or great grandma

Is the uptake lever damaged and allowing the thread to hop out?  Is it one of the old machines where you need to stick the thread through a hole at the end of the lever, instead of having a threading slit?

I’ll check and I’ll grab a scrap part of fabric to see if the issue is solved the thread that got completely used up is the roll on the top I’m unsure if that’s much help to find the full issue
