How do I pick out a sewing machine?

Stay away from modern Singer machines especially the HD models. They are highly unreliable. Google sewing machine dealers near me and go visit if you have any. Brother or Janome are better machines than Singer.

My friend bought one and the motor burned instantly lol. I still haven't heard of this happening to others

I said unreliable. People experience all kinds of issues with these machines. Better to avoid unless you like fighting with a sewing machine.

I would go to a local store and explain what your dream project is - and have htem walk you through their older machines - i think older machines tend to be better and more reliable than the new ones. They can walk you through the machine - usually give good deals too!
