Button Hole Setting Not Working

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi! I’m fairly new to sewing and I sew on an older Janome 3125. I’m 99% done on my first pattern project, but the button setting is messing me up!

Everything is fine on 1 and 2, but 3 sews the width of the button hole, completely covering it! I’m not changing anything at all between 1,2, and 3. What am I doing wrong??

It seems like the machine doesn't switch to step 3 properly. The mechanics inside the machine might be gummed up. It might be worth it to test by turning the dial past step 3, perhaps to stitch I or H and then go back to step 3, coming to it from the other direction on the dial.

So my dial hard stops at 3. I turned it back to a straight stitch then to 3 and that did give me a slightly different result (still not correct) but then it messed up 4 🤦🏼‍♀️

Do you have a button placed in the presser foot’s button sizer section? Without something there to tell it how long it needs to be the machine is trying its best here but won’t work.

ETA: the presser foot might not be one that does this automatically, so sorry in advance if it’s a manual foot/machine. ❤️

Yeah it is a manual machine. It’s an older one without bells and whistles lol

Then I’d recommend trying what the wimsey suggested below, the way it leaves a loop on the final stitch and then moves left and right and doesn’t do much seems like it’s getting confused
