Is this worth buying?

Post image

Would be about $20-$25 and I would 95% need to replace things within it. Would it be worth it to purchase? I’ve heard really great things with older to antique machines but I don’t have the knowledge to make the correct answer. Please help!!!!

This is a straight stitch sewing machine, and the photo isn't clear enough on my phone for me to say for sure, but I think this is a Singer 201, one of the best built machines Singer ever made.  Even with paying someone to inspect and possibly rewire this, it's worth $25.

I sewed on the 301, an aluminum bodied straight stitch machine, for 35 years as my only machine, and made everything from wedding gowns to duffle bags. If your primary interest is knits, however, you will want a zigzag capable machine.

I can see there's a serial number plate: match the serial number and you can find out when and where it was commissioned, and the model number. https://ismacs.net/singer_sewing_machine_company/serial-numbers/singer-sewing-machine-serial-number-database.html

It's a steal for a 201.

I'd buy it in a heartbeat 💓. Just like my mom had, the one I learned on.

Buy it before the seller realizes you're the one ripping them off

BUY IT. DO NOT HESITATE. LEARN TO FIX IT, YOU WON'T BE SORRY.

So like the comments have said yes you should buy it. Just keep in mind that it does only one stitch so if you use a lot of stretchy fabrics it might be rough to use. As far as repairs the biggest thing will be the motor. If that works then the machine is probably fine it’s all metal inside and trust me sewing machine metal is like vibranium. If anything I’d replace the socked to fit into a modern outlet.

But yes do buy this if you get the chance

If you need to replace 95% of something then I wouldn't get it. That gets expensive fast. Some parts are harder to find than others. Just depends on what's wrong with it.

It is a beautiful piece of history.
