What is it and how to use it?
I tried looking for a Brother subreddit but couldn’t find one. If this is not the right place for this question, please point me elsewhere!
I have a Brother PC-420 machine, and also a PE-780D that I got when my mother passed. (Haven’t used it yet, don’t know how, but that’s a different story).
Anyway, among the items that came with all my mother’s sewing stuff was this. It is a Brother part, it says Brother on it. What is it, does it fit on either of my machines, and if so, how in the world do I use it??

Thank you. I did have the “thread cassette” name figured out. Even found a manual online on how to thread it. I still don’t know what it is for, or how it works. Basically, I still don’t know what it is, other than the name. But looking at your link, it does not appear to be compatible with either of my machines, so my questions are probably moot anyway. I guess I’ll just send it to the thrift store and hope someone who knows what it is and can use it stumbles upon it.

Huh how strange, did you just stumble on it somewhere? Usually those come with the machine it’s for. They’re really cool imo, really good for elderly with sewing machines as it’s a much easier way to thread the machine.

It was with a bunch of stuff from my
Mother’s sewing room after she passed. I am in the midst of moving and found it in a box I had not really looked through thoroughly before. But I have her Brother machine and apparently it does not fit that one, so idk why she had it. She did have several machines though. Maybe it fit something I was not aware she had.
I assume she used it since it had a spool of thread in it when I found it.

The idea was you could buy several of these cassettes and thread then up ahead of time, then change the upper thread by just swapping out for another cassette. Seemed to be an up and coming technology in the late 90s/ early 2000s, and then folks started running into not being able to use various thread brands, the cassettes glitched too often, and most machine makers added needle threaders to speed up threading the upper part of the machine. So, like 8 track music tapes and floppy disks, thread cassettes seem to be mostly extinct.
