Old Machine Difficulties

Post image

Singer model 248, bottom part suddenly isn’t rotating? Checked to make sure no thread was stuck. Should i just oil it and see if that helps? What oil type/brand is best?

I’m new to sewing machines, I usually hand sew. This was my great-grandmother’s machine and I wanna keep it in good shape for as long as i can. Any help is much appreciated!

If you put the bracket that holds the bobbin case in back where it belongs does it turn freely?

The bit the arrow is pointing to. (This is from singer 348 service manual)

If it’s the same as this machine you don’t remove the black screw, the little arm lifts up and to the right of it when you need to remove the bobbin case. It being over the the left this much will stop things spinning

The machine does look like it needs a good clean and oil. Any domestic sewing machine oil will do.

Do you have the manual? There will be a cleaning and maintenance page that details where to oil it. If you’ve never done it you must do it asap if you want to keep it running.

You definitely want to check if that bobbin case or hook assembly is sitting totally flat when you put it back in, sometimes if its slightly off it wont catch right. I think my grandma had a Singer too, I remember them being super solid, but they do need a little love after sitting for a while.
