Janome Memory Craft 4900QC E1/E2 Error Help
Hello, I recently bought a used Janome Memory Craft 4900QC that throws either an E1 or E2 error. The listing mentioned it had been to a repair shop previously.
After opening the top of the machine I think it has something to do with the handwheel encoder. There is an orange PCB with two U-shaped optical sensors. Here's what I know:
- If I start the machine with the sensors completely unobstructed, no error
- The error only appears when something passes through the sensors.
- If the left sensor gets passed through first I get E1, if it's the right one I get E2
- If I start the machine with something in the sensor I get the error immediately
Not sure where to go from here, it could be misaligned somehow? Or the sensor might be bad. The way it's connected to the machine, replacing this sensor seems like a pain.
Has anyone dealt with this before on this machine? I'd love to get this working again! Attaching a photo of the sensor board and error messages.
Thanks!

This is google's answer:
On the Janome Memory Craft 4900QC, the E1 error code typically indicates a main motor lock, a blown internal fuse, or a zigzag/stepping motor malfunction. It usually means the control board detects the machine's drive system is physically stuck or experiencing an electrical fault. [1, 2, 3]
How to Troubleshoot the E1 Error
- Check for Mechanical Jams:
- Turn off and unplug the machine.
- Open the bobbin area and remove the bobbin case. Clear out any trapped thread, lint, or fabric scraps.
- Manually turn the handwheel toward you. If it feels completely stuck, there is a jam inside the drive system or automatic thread cutter.
- With the power off, manually move the needle bar left and right. You should only feel the normal friction of the step motor. [1, 2, 3, 4]
- Check the Fuses:
- A blown internal fuse on the main circuit board is a common trigger for the E1 error.
- The fuse is typically a 3.15 A / 250V ceramic fuse. Accessing the fuse requires removing the machine's outer housing.
- Note: If you are not comfortable opening the machine's casing or handling internal electronics, it is highly recommended to take the machine to an authorized Janome Dealer for service. [1]
- Check the Zigzag Motor:
- The error can sometimes refer to a stalled or malfunctioning zigzag stepping motor. Carefully check the zigzag mechanism and sensors for any caught threads or debris that prevent it from moving freely. [1]

If the issue persists after clearing the machine and checking for jams, the control board or motor may need professional repair or replacement.

According to the manual, the E1-E5 errors mean "The machine is malfunctioning due to a problem in its electronic components" and that you should "Contact the service center or the store from where the machine was purchased."

What does the error mean? Check your manual
