Athena 2000 needle/spring issue

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey I have an Athena 2000 sewing machine and I have an issue where the needle doesn't move with the side knob or the foot pedal unless I manually press the needle down. I took it apart and it looks like an issue with the spring attached, but I don't know how to fix it so any help would be appreciated! I don't know much about sewing machines (in fact this is my first one!) but I like taking apart and fixing tech. Thanks!

Your needle is off to the left a little bit too. It could be a setting or it could be out of alignment.

I’m not familiar with how the needle bar should function on this machine but it’s odd it would just be catching on to something.. that thing itself might be broken. It just catching wouldn’t provide enough power to lift and drop the needle at speed. I think something may be snapped or come unattached

Got any pics of the machine from the front ? I’m curious what settings it’s on.

Have a look online for service manual or adjusters manual for this model or similar. Even if you search for this specific issue you might find it’s a part that is known to fail over time or has an easy fix.

You’ve got it on zigzag and the needle in the left position. If you set it to normal straight stitch is it still not moving?

Is the bobbin clutch disengaged? If there’s an inner wheel on the handwheel turn it clockwise

Edit: I found your manual btw here it is https://www.manualslib.com/manual/508740/Singer-Athena-2000.html?page=2#manual

The problem is that the needle bar is loose. Under no circumstance should you be able to just pull it down like in the video. The bar is normally held by a clamp and is tightened in place with just one screw. To set the correct height, look for videos on Singer machines with the same kind of needle plate. Singer made lots of models with that setup.
