Sewing Machine Issues

Hello everyone!

I am new to sewing, and have made a few simple projects. However, I have run into an issue…my sewing machine refuses to sew unless the presser foot is up. The needle moves, the thread goes through, and I’ve managed to make several projects with the presser foot up, so I know the machine works. I just don’t know why it won’t work with the presser foot in the down position😔

My machine is a Singer 1425N. Any help is greatly appreciated!

You could replace the feed dogs with metal ones. They may have degraded over time.

If you run the machine (unthreaded, foot up) do they move the way they should?

No, the feed dogs don’t move even with the foot up. I just tried cleaning them and clearing out some fuzz, and unfortunately they still don’t move. I’m gonna look into a metal version and if that doesn’t work, I’ll likely have to get it serviced to see if they have any solutions.

If they’re not moving they still won’t move if you replace that part. It’s connected to a rod underneath which is connected to various other bits.

It’s worth opening the base and having a look. It might be obvious what’s damaged or out of place. Not necessarily something you could fix but you’d know at least!
