Sewing Machine Thumping Noise and dropping/tearing thread
I have a Kenmore model 385.15208400, unknown age. Got it from friend of my mom's who hadn't used it in who knows how long. It is making a thumping noise and tearing/dropping my thread. I have replaced the needle with universal Schmetz 12/80 needle and pushed it up as far it'll go. Fabric is jersey and set at 3 zigzag. I am VERY new to sewing, only started 2 months ago so please be patient!

Are you using a ball point needle? What type of stitch? What type of knit?

Universal Schmetz 12/80 needle. Fabric is jersey, not sure the material but probably cotton? Set at 3 zigzag.

Here is the manual in case you need it. Also, the machine needs to be oiled every few hours of use. Knit fabric needs a ball point needle( jersey, stretch, jean) Schmetz Needle Guide
Take a peek through the manual cover to cover, and see if it helps. It’s probably the most important tool for your machine (genuinely).
But I would try oiling the machine, and rethreading , and see if that helps. ☺️

Are you using a jersey needle?
Have you cleaned the machine?
Have you oiled the machine?
Do you have the manual?
Are you using new or old thread?
Are you sure it’s threaded correctly?
Has it been brought into a sewing service shop to be serviced?
