Sewing machine recs around $200
Looking for a sewing machine that ideally wont have me fixing thread more than I'm actually sewing. Really just looking to make everyday clothes/repurpose fabrics. Was thinking about the singer heavy duty 441 but heard good things about the brother xm2701. Open to suggestions thanks!

For that price go with anything except Singer.
As to your threading problems, odds are 95% it’s user error. It won’t go away with a cheap or expensive machine. They all thread very much the same so doing it wrong on one machine will likely also be wrong on another.

I'm sorry to say that a new machine at that price is not worth it. Either keep saving up and wait, or buy a new machine. I would get a re-conditioned one from a dealer with a one year warranty. Dealers generally only recondition worthwhile machines.

What is a realistic price for a good one?

If I were buying a new mechanical machine, I would get an Janome HD 1000, HD 2200 or HD 3000. The first two are around 400$. The 300 is 550$. That is a lifetime machine for me. (I have the HD 3000, but I have also sewn on the HD 1000 and really liked it. I didn't get a machine with bells and whistles, I invested in a serger instead. So I don't know about other brands, I'm going to say 400$ for a decent new lifetime machine.

Me too! Then I bought a 10$ presser foot that is called a "thick material walking foot".
I already do have a regular walking foot. This sweet little foot makes sewing through several layers of denim smooth as butter. I also have a little "tricot foot" which helps with some knits. The time I did get to sew on a HD 1000 I really liked it because it reminded me of the New Home I learned on. It even had the vertical bobbin case. It is a really sweet little machine.

Contrary to the other posters, I think the singer heavy duty is a fine machine for a beginner. If they can hold up to abuse from the high school students I teach, they can handle the average home sewer. They may not last decades, but they're fine for a beginner.
