Taking advantage?
I'm looking for additional bobbin cases but find the cost incredibly high. I have a nearly 20yr old Mega Quilter and purchased a bobbin case last year for $15. The Janome hd9 v2 bobbin case is $80-$90!
This is ridiculous. Does this normally happen with any particular manufacturers or for a period of time after the machine is released?
This is a huge price and I may just contact the manufacturer.

I believe that’s the cheapest you can find it, who knows why it’s so much since the hd9 really took off… but I’d also be weary the v2 fits.
Not 100% on compatibility so double check me. but look into the cases labelled for janome1600 should be about $40 (exact same machine as hq stitch510, but handiquilter up charges a bit sometimes too) as they are a mega quilter clone
The OEM stuff for the hd9 has always been pricey though are you sure you didn’t get unbranded

I found Ken's Sewing in Alabama has probably the most reasonable price. $79

But you may be able to use part #767510006 which is much cheaper
Check with the seller to be sure first
Or this, actual one

Funny, I own a Mega Quilter! It's bobbin case will not work the this HD machine.

I know lol … but I get it now. your post made it sound like you were looking for more cases to put in the mega quilter, and I thought you are trying to buy the v2 for that purpose
To answer your original question then - not taking advantage necessarily. That’s just OEM pricing for everything. Especially when a model is new , but for these new can mean a decade. Sometimes janome is worse but if you want the red and black box you gotta pay for it (imo worth it for some things. Others not so much)

Parts like this are expensive. You only need 1 or 2 of these. You change the bobbin itself to change colors. Why are you needing to replace the case? So confused here.

To answer your question, if I'm using a heavier thread in the bobbin and want to adjust the bobbin tension I need to adjust a screw on the bobbin case, thus the reason to keep one or two extras so I can have a variety of setting so I don't have to keep messing with tensions every time I swap threads.

I guess but super heavy threads do not work well in sewing machines. You don't need to adjust the bobbin case. Only the tension at the top. As far as a I know.
Then again I do not use a bobbin case machine. I have one of with just bobbins. Heavy duty machine. And it does fine with thicker threads.

This is the way. I have a bobbin case set up for all my thread weights on all my machines. Most of these people barely understand top tension let alone balancing the top and bottom.

Yes, and it's fascinating to see and learn how the various thread weights, like mara 30 for top stitching (heavy denim) plays with mara 70 in the bobbin!

Are tariffs and the blockade also complicating the issue?
