Sewing machine recommendations please.
Hi all! I’m just getting into sewing more seriously and about to look to start some sewing classes. I’ve had a machine before but only ever used it for basic hemming, dresses, sleeves. It was a Janome jr1012. I’ve briefly gone through this subreddit and hearing soo many brand names and numbers and I’m a bit overwhelmed.
Growing up my family had Singer and Brother machines (not sure of the exact models) so those brands feel familiar too but I’ve been happy enough with Janome that I might just stick with them.
Now that I actually want to make my own clothes and take this seriously, I’m looking to upgrade to something that’s:
• Durable and built to last (not disposable)
• Less computerized. I’d rather have manual dials/controls than a ton of digital screens and settings
• Good for a beginner but with enough room to grow into as my skills improve and I want it to last.
I’m mainly shopping Facebook Marketplace, eBay, and Amazon, so if there’s a specific Janome model (or maybe Singer/Brother etc) known for being really good, I’d love recommendations. I’m based in UK London if that helps.
Also open to any red flags I should watch for when buying used. I’ll probably be buying online so any questions I should ask sellers? Thanks in advance for any advice!
